The sonic equivalent of being smacked in the face with a tornado

Posted by: Richard AV on 25 May 2004

I believe some here will appreciate what I am talking about...

Today I was listening to Rage Against The Machine's Battle Of LA album on a CDX2/202/Hi/Napsc/200/PMC GB1 system and it was *awesome*. I love Rage anyway but this really stopped me from leaving to go do some real work. The dynamics and sense of scale, without being hard and overtly agressive, really put across the musical message. I think this comes down to what a lot of people say about Naim being able to really communicate with the listener. I think it's fair to say one normally suggests this theory relates to a nice piece of relaxing jazz or a classical quartet, not loud funky rap metal.

Any other recommendations that would leave ones cheeks suitably windswept?

Just been playing Dead Cells (Papa Roach).
This is nicely loud, but have been told that the neighbours are in the garden & I should be more considerate Frown

Just dusted down and given a spin to Cry of Love - Brother. Track 3 "Bad Thing" rocks.

Cheers

This is such a great thread!

Tracks I would suggest to clean the ear-wax:

Jesus Built My Hotrod -- Ministry

Wish and its intro, Pinion -- NIN (love the line "I'm just the man with song great big fucking hole"

Babae I'm Gonna Leave you -- Zep (the whole quiet/loud thing years before the Pixies)

Forkboy -- Lard (Jello fronting Ministry; how can you go wrong?)

Chromatic Death -- Anthrax

Aces High -- Iron Maiden (though its badly recorded, the version off of Live After Death with the Churchill intro totally rocks -- "Scream for me Long Beach!")

Anything by Death Angel -- they all kinda sound the same; quality speed metal

Killing in the Name Of -- RATM (this came out when I was 21 and pissed off; moshing to it was therapy!)

Paranoid -- Black Sabbath (they have better songs, but for playing something loud, you can't beat Paranoid's brief burst of intensity)

The Moor -- Opeth (admittedly I'm not a fan of the death metal voice, but if you can overlook that, this track builds with tremendous intesity)

Jesus Christ Pose -- Soundgarden (especially the bit towards the end when Cornell has just finished shouting "Nails!" and the guitars really go into overdrive!)

Shake Your Blood -- Probot with Lemmy (Pure class! Which of course leads into . . .)

Ace of Spades -- Motorhead (Testosterone Unbound)

There are many others, but I've got to get back to the grindstone for now.

An exquisite choice. I'll add White Zombie's "Black Sunshine", the essence of tongue-in-cheek trailer park metal. It used to make me giggle.

I think Tool is a step above most rock bands of late. Aenima is probably the best place to start followed by Undertow and Lateralis.

Guys

2 more in the post for me:

Sevendust - Seasons
Stone Sour - Stone Sour

Looking forward to hearing the 2nd of these, as it's got the lead "singer" from Slipknot, and is supposed to be far more melodic than his other band, but still nice and chunky. Will report back on Monday.

And all this time I've been too timid to mention.....metal.
To be honest I have'nt got a scooby about most of the music mentioned in the majority of this forum's music threads, and was beginning to think that most Naim fans were far too arty and trendy !

And all this time there's all these naim metal fans out there.

So my tornado face smackers would be.......

Ace of Spades: possibly one of the greatest metal albums of all time, certainly Motorhead's finest moment.
Antichrist Superstar: Forget the image, just listen to this album - incredible.
Reign in Blood: 25 minutes of very intense music, certainly Slayer's finest moments.
Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing: Crusty punk does not get any better than this. Discharge's finest moment.
Gladiator OST: Track 3, the Battle: I am not a classical fan but crank this track up and test your bass response.

Oldies but goldies....Led Zep (all albums), Black Sabbath (Up to & Incl.Never Say Die), ACDC (Up to & incl. For Those About)
- All air guitar greats. Tony Iommi is the riff master.

I could go on and on......a few (old and new) who have not been mentioned yet and deserve recomendation:
Filter, Bathory, VAST, Van Halen (DLR era), WASP, Kiss (there's my cred gone totally)

...and party ev-er-ry-day.

Are you off to see WASP when they play in a couple of weeks?
Posted on: 04 June 2004 by adamk
By christ no, my concert days are long past. (Robbie at Knebworth is about as rock as I get these days)

WASP are so uncool, I had to assume heavy disguise to purchase their new album (which is not as good as previous if anyone is remotely interested)

I will however own up to seeing WASP supported by Thor !? circa sometime 1985 promoting Animal FLAB and their 1st Album at St Albans (I think).
I remember women on racks, lots of raw meat flying about and Thor blowing up a hot water bottle.
My those were the days...

Shame. I wonder, though, did you don the same disguise to go and see Mr Williams? Wink

I think WASP are in the 'so bad they're good' category, along with a few other of the theatrical type bands (Lizzie Borden or GWAR, anyone?), and so shouldn't ever be thought of as cool or uncool - I thought they were just supposed to be fun. That gig in '85 certainly sounded like fun, anyway...I remember the tour but was too young to attend(at least according to my mum) any of the shows, so had to wait until the next year for my first ever metal gig: the mighty Motorhead, supported by Sword, at the UEA in Norwich. I remember seeing a hawkwind casualty asleep(!) in the bass-bins, and it being so loud that ceiling tiles were falling down.

As you say, those were the days.... Big Grin

Going back in time a bit over the weekend including:

An outing for The Dan Reed Network - The Heat, a fusion of rock and funk. A much under-rated band. Seek them out.

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, what a fabulous album.

Cheers

Wow. Now there's a blast from the past. They are local (to me, anyway; a Portland band). Their eponymous debut album (circa 1988?) was a scorcher.

I really like all Sabbath's first 6 albums but Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (and the debut album) are my favorites.

I have one Dan Reed Network album, 'Slam' I think, but it's years since I've listened to it. A bit more AOR than much mentioned on this thread IIRC.

I really like their album 'Dragline' - that song 'Jessie' always reminds me of watching Raw Power in the early hours of Sunday mornings, as the video for it always seemed to be on.

My own (re)discovery from the weekend has been 'The Action Is Go' by Fu Manchu - the first album of theirs with Brant Bjork from Kyuss on drums, and a thoroughly good one too. Played it back to back with 'Powertrip' from Monster Magnet and had a totally fun couple of hours. Finished off the listening session with the soundtrack to the original musical of 'Evita' with David Essex. Rock on.

Sabbath: Any of the Ozzy albums - my personal fave 'Vol 4' - way ahead of its time - not a duff track on it

Fu Manchu: 'The action is Go' - By far their best. Their last effort 'California Crossing' was a bit dissapointing

Monster Magnet: 'Powertrip' - Crop Circle and Space Lord are mega tracks- Easily their best - follow up album 'God says No' was very average

A couple of other doomier faves......

Paradise Lost: 'Draconian Times'Doom metal par excellence , followed by 'One Second' which was totally different - Sisters of Mercy go Metal

Spiritual Beggars: 'Mantra III' is their best album - great riffs

Anathema: Any album apart from the early stuff is Well recomended.

Seconded, FWIW - did you see them with Fu Manchu as well, by any chance? I caught the gig in Leeds at the Joseph's Well, and it was absolutely fanbloomingtastic.

Most excellent thread, dudes!!

I listen to all this stuff and a spot of DJ Tiesto, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and the like...

My question is with a CD5/FC2/112/150+Rega P3/Stageline -
currently with Kef Q1's, as the system is in the bedroom for a few more months til I get into the new house -

WHAT SPEAKERS DO I BUY???
how do I purchase the aforementioned sonic tornado?

Room will be 10' X 15'6" X 8'

Could spend upto $5000 - my wife would like me to spend less!!

Regards

Richard

One suggestion...must be played at maximum volume;

King Crimson "USA" ...this will destroy you!!! (In a good way)
Posted on: 17 June 2004 by Rasher
Thanks Bhazen. I thought I had all the KC albums - but looking last night for USA I realised I don't have it. Now on order. Thanx.

It's hot & sunny!!!!!
I have on really f***ing loud:
Foo Fighters - Podunk Putting it on again even louder. Razz

For a bit of trailer trash rock:

Love / Hate - wasted in America.

Perfect for this weather!

Got "Stone Sour" from amazon about a month ago and damn good it is too. Some very heavy bits, but considerably less agro than Slipknot, where the lead singer and guitarist orginally come from.
