Nuits Saint Georges

The young girl in Threshers looked totally blank, "never heard of it me dear !" was all she could offer. And the shelves in Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Tesco (at least in Newbury) were full of "New World" offerings. Of which we have a few.

But I would still like to get a couple of bottles of Nuits Saint Georges, old-fashioned though that might be. (And a couple Chateau Neuf whilst I'm at it).

I plan to be in the City (of London!!!) on Wednesday or Thursday this week and also Kingsway (near Holborn). so almost anywhere in central london would be within range.

Any idea where I might try???

Cheers

You have some lovely wines there, and should have a great time. I dread to think how much 94 La Bernadine cost - save it for discerning friends - but top vintage, top producer, great wine.

Givrot is a good producer so, that should be excellent too, and Pinot Noir is a perfect grape for rich or fatty food, so if you are having duck or goose the match should be excellent.

The 94 Port will be more supple than the 97 (both great years however). LBV doesn't keep particularly, but won't go wrong either.

Enjoy!

PT me your e-mail address and I will send you the Burgundy document with pleasure. Derek has hosted it online, but I'm not sure if I am free to post the address.

Yes post away - it is probably less of a load than referencing a picture on the site

Just got in a brace of Tarragona rouge for my supper, very nice too @ €3,95 a bottle, innit.

Courtesy of Derek, Burgundy Guide. Many thanks.

Patrick, correct, you have probably discovered a disliking for heavily oaked, slightly oxidative wines, so allow yourself never to get tempted by Grand Reserva Rioja (more than twice the price) because it probably wouldn't float your boat either.

Fritz has hit on something here, Tarragona is producing some very excellent "new wave" (ie not like Rioja) red wines, especially in the small sub-area of Mont-Sant. There is a producer, Capçanes, whose wines are in the UK, and worth looking out for. Best grape variety here seems to be Garnacha (Grenache).

All the best

Rod,

I found a few of your list in Majestic but was then told you have to buy at least 12 bottles (which is the "warehouse" bit I guess) which was rather annoying. The bloke look appalled at my suggestion that I get another customer to buy my three bottles with their trolley full and then give them the cash afterwards.

The Borolo is now £10 btw.

I had more success in Oddbins and found everything except the Menetou-Salon. The Brunello was 1998 which is hopefully a good thing and not some terrible wine blunder that will cause by snobby uncle to look down his nose at me on Boxing Day.

Anyway, I am sure my Dad will be delighted with a rather more informed selection than usual.

Thanks again.
Matthew

PS Conversation in Oddbins:

Me: I'd like a bottle of whiskey and don't know much about it. Can you recommend something.

Assistant: What sort of Whiskey do you like?

Me: I don't know, and anyway it's for my Brother-in-Law

Assistant: Does he like Whiskey?

Me: No, I was hoping to annoy him.

Assistant: I'm not sure what sort then...

Don,

What did you think of the wines that you bought at BBR?

Steve

It's a grand old team to play for...
