That's a newie on me, I always thought the idea was to keep the power supplies away from the preamp.

• how long did you "struggle" with the 552, before she started singing for you ?
  
• Manger 103 are gone, and will likely not come back
  
• there are new "smallish" MBL's out. Good reviews. Not heard, though.
  
• what make were the "garbage cans" you had a picture of ? Never seen them.

It was wierd. The loaner 552 I had was well-run in and kept warm. Yet it took about a week for my brain to adjust.

But as I keep playing discs after discs, I started to get a hang of what's doing.
The emotional impact did not hit me till later on unlike any other Naim kit I've tried. Usually, they hit you in your herat first. In the beginning it was as if more of an intelectual excersise. I don't think I ever heard this much details throwing at me from a record. It was like putting your glasses on and all of a sudden you can see everything in sharp focus. My brain went overload! In fact, I was going to return it.

Then later on, I realised it wasn't about the resolution or informatin at all. It is about timing thing. Everything else sounds slower to me now. It seems my *reference point* has changed. And I guess that's the adjustment I had to make.

A standmounts MBL?
I've heard a brief listen at the CES. Sounded promissing. Not sure you can use Naim power with it tho since they are notoriously inefficient.

Have you heard Duevel Bella Luna? Another decent omni who are not power hogs.

It took me a while to wrap myself around the "Naim" sound. It was not until I added a pair of SBLs to my system that I fully understood what Julian's designs were all about. You seem like a good candidate for a NAP500 and DBLs. Have you had the chance to hear a top flight Naim system?

I know it is down at a lower level but I took on a CDS3 (new) and a 252 (2nd Hand) in one go from having the CDX2/XPS2/282/SC2 combo and went through something similar. I know these are silly terms which make a futile attempt to explain what you hear but your description of what you had to adjust to is excellent and is almost a perfect representation of what happened for me.

Intially I was quite uncertain and wondered whistfully where the "bounce" in the CDX2/282 combo had gone. I also felt everything was "slower", the kit just seemed to have more time to play even fast music and there was a presentation change which was like cleaning a slightly dirty window and seeing more clearly. The 252 does it job in a very subtle way which is masked by the CDS3 presentation until you learn to understand what it is contributing. Using it for Vinyl replay tends to help by giving it the chance to shine by itself.

Incidentally I know someone who went for a 552 and struggled the same way intially.

Stefan you will need to give the 252 a really good listen if you get the same effect as Kuma and myself.

Bruce,
whenever it's online, it's CARA web site. As stated before (and communicated to the owner, Mr. Zirker), the site is horrible, and almost useless. There would be creative room for a web designer experienced with high end sites (hint, hint, ... ).

They DO the "Shahinian thing" to an extend. Building that special room experience and being non-critical about speaker and listener placement is something they share with the Shahinians (eg. Hawk). Tonally, CARA is less on the bright side, though. And, the only reason why I'm flirting with alternatives is their less than optimal bass performance (a tad too floppy).

Welcome to the forum! Nice looking setup -- but how comfortable are those Eames chairs for listening? If I'm not mistaken those floor tiles look like the ones from DWR -- I did the exact same thing -- a 4x3 pattern on my hardwood floors right in front of the speakers. Have you considered moving the system from between the speakers?
