They are from '87. The external cross overs are stashed away on wooden blocks behind the speakers.

The dealer called the tweeters "Polymers". They have three protective brackets across them. (Should have had those when I was sharing my house with a cat)

Unfortunately it spend more time sleeping on the speakers than listening to it.

By popular request. (Well at least one person asked).

I moved my speakers to the other leg of my "L" shaped living room and as can be seen they are now firing across the short width rather than down the long length.

Result is a defenite improvement, the bass in particular has tightened up nicely and the image is better spread between the speakers and somehow slightly more alive. In theory the 1st audible room node has moved up from 32Hz to 50Hz but it hardly sounds at all. This stuff about firing across the room really works, at least for me.

HERE WE GO.......



OH BTW... You might notice I did have to lightly stuff the rear firing ports due to their proximity to the back wall but it does'nt seem to have deadened the dynamics at all.
If you are wondering the Naim kit is round the corner down the end where the TT is.

Speakers 2.2 meters apart. Speaker to ear distance 2.4 meters so it just fits the golden triangle ratio. Before the speakers were the same distance apart but I sat 3.2 meters away.

I moved to experiment and to get the HiFi output well away from the surround speakers. I happen to have a cheap pair of KEF uniQ's which are now doing duty as the rear speakers. My thread about crap B&W's & a subwoofer refers to the CM2's which are now doing duty as the front speakers in the surround sound "area".

Small update here.
Have just bought a MF X-Cans SET valve head amp (pristine condition for the princely sum of only £60 ). Here is a wide shot including my Sennheiser HD575 headphones (I'm not sure what the title of these are...?Symphony):

As an aside, I didn't recieve anything with the amp ("sold as seen", no box or instructions). Does anyone know what valves it uses? I also assume the original purchae date would've been about 5 years ago? In which case, when would I need to go about replacing them roughly?

There are US and European names for the valves used in all MF X-Cans 1/2/3-

ECC88(Eur)/6DJ8(US). Better quality generally are E88CC/6922. Even better still usually are
E188CC/7308. Then the CCa.

At that distance don't you find you are listening to the tweeters?

Thanks , yes but the replacement was done by the guys which made the former (1980-90) Focal design and sales for Germany. I like them very much! They are easy to drive and match perfectly to the Naim Sound.

I’ve called them Unique Onyx. The Drivers are custom made respectively very special Focal Chassis.

I see that you're using the PENaudio Rebels on their sub-stands.
I'm a regular customer of a Sonneteer/PENaudio dealer, and he's very enthousiastig about these small miraculous speakers.
But,...he also told me that these PENaudio speakers need lots of space behing them.
I see you are using the Rebels very close to the wall.

Yes and the bass mid range units aswell! To be serious I know what you are asking and the answer is no, the sound is very well intergated and as usual with standmount speakers completely "out of the box" and not at all localised.

Martin. Interesting and very well made. The wood finish on the cabinets is very nice and I would guess from their volume they do bass rather well.

Hi Lee,

What type of clamp/weight are you using with that Xerxes? Are you still removing the spindle when you put it on?

I'm also a Xerxes owner and I understand that most folks don't use clamps or weights because they feel it defeats the design purpose of de-coupling the LP from the bearing via the removable spindle. What is your experience here?

You win some, you loose some.

My room has got TERRIBLE acoustics
Regarding the sound of my system in my room,
I regret buying this appartment 7 years ago.
My previous, small rental appartment was WAY MUCH better in this regard.

Whatever speaker I set up in my room, I get this horrible, fat, uncontrolled boomy bass.

So, in the way my speakers are placed now, the bass has gotten a little better.
(as long as I sit down! As soon as I stand op...it's back)

The whole soundstage has gotten wider and deeper because the speakers are further apart.
On the other hand instruments and voices have lost some body, and can sound a little thin at times.

I had to use some left over VDH Clearwater cable. It's the only cable I got left that's long enough. (2x5 meters)

Anyway, before I change my mind and put the whole thing back to were it was yesterday...
