System Pics 2005

Posted by: Steve Toy on 05 November 2004

Further to Geoff P's marvellous pics on This thread, a new year and a new thread to post pics of your pride and joy (all-Naim or at least part-Naim) awaits so that we can all get nit-picky about placement issues - to your ultimate sonic benefit! Smile

Regards,

Steve.

CoolHi,

Here is a picture of my music room with the NBLs and some of the acustic treatment that I have applied.

The products are delivered from a company in Sweden called Svana Akustik Miljo.

I currently use their "Creation Panels" (AD20 = 40mm depth and AD40=90mm depth) as well as their "Golden Horn" diffusor. The Creation Panels are made of oak foiled and profiled MDF and have a very nice studio design. The Golden Horn (the two white segments between the speakers) are made of some plastic material covered with transparent cloth.

The Creation Panel works as diffusor while the Golden Horn is a combination of absorbtion/diffusion. I use four sets of the Golden Horns at side walls as well to tame the first and second reflection. The combined effect of the panels and the Golden Horn is really fantastic in my room (width = 3.1m, length 7.3m, height 2.5m)which is rather difficult from an acoustic perspective. A key effect is the improvement on the sound field that become much wider/deeper than without the treatment. In addition, the presentation of the music/performance becomes much more clear (less congested/cluttered). Without the treatment the room was a nightmare.

Here is some explanation of the Creation Panel from the manufacturer:

"The architectural image and the acoustic versatility of the AD panels make them fulfill the high requirements of studios, THX certified cinemas, 5.1 film mixing rooms, concert halls, home movie auditoriums etc. In cases where bass absorption is preferred the AD panels are fastened to beams with a slit between them. In combination and due to the depth of the slit and the volume of air behind the panels optional frequencies may be absorbed. The combination of half cylinders and the mid section sequence of primitive roots, result in spreading of the sound in time and simultaneously minimising disturbing reflexes. Since the mid section is not periodical the spreading will be optimised if the AD40 is assembled randomly."

Anders

Anders,

The problem with scatterers is that they create a large variation of path length (particularly for high frequencies) that smears the timing.

Andrew,

Interesting comment.

Before I used the panels/absorbers, the sound/music was all over the place and it was really difficult to follow a tune. After the installation the music seem to flow in perfect order with all the PRaT you could ask for.

A ( Smilelucky?) case of when theory and practice yield different results?

The total investment is also relatively modest relative an equipment upgrade (in the order of a Hicap cost).

Seems that in your case, having a scatterer is the lesser of two evils if room resonance is occuring.

... the big MF

Jag,

Fabulous. Looks to me like a giant ROLEX mechanism. How many quarts of oil do you use to lubricate that 'heavy metal' movement? I am sure syntetic oil will do wonders to the sound!

Hi Haim,
4 gallons!
heheh I do use Synth oil. Magnatec.

Actually, I love watch movements. A.Lange & Sohn, Patek Philippe, Roger Dubois, FP Journe, Jaegre le Coultre etc...

And it plays heavy metal with a vengeance!

Cheers

UPDATED hifi:

http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?vdone&1127246906&view

added a Turntable and a Phonostage and made my own IC's (short 25cm signal path to phono, and longer 75cm IC to PrimaLuna):

Taken from the 'light or heavy supports for Naim' thread.

Considering the "rules of proper setup" on dedicated (preferably light but rigid) stands, it shouldn't sound this good, but my humble system has never sounded any better than it does now...

Here is the latest version of mine with the new arrival installed.

Geoff P,

V nice indeed. I see the centre speaker has changed!!!

Is that an Orbe?

what arm/cart is fitted (I know you use a DV P75).

Geoff P,

That carpet is simply astonishing!

And the Hi-Fi looks bl**dy fine as well.

What's the arm on yer Gyro?

Dex

SME M2 I reckon
Posted on: 03 December 2005 by Geoff P
Thanks

Andy
Center speaker is a Totem Dreamcatcher I picked up 2nd Hand which matches the tonal signature of the Mani's quite nicely

Dexter
You are right, the deck is a Gyro which I may one day do the Orbe upgrade on but it sounds pretty good already IMO.
Carpet courtusey of IKEA

Yo-Yo
You are right the arm is an SME M2

The cartridge is a Koetsu Black which has a slightly rich balance but great bass resolution and plays my mainstream jazz collection beautifully.

I can vouch for that Cool

Geoff, that's a great system you have there. With the 300, it would have been quite happily my desert island system....a real pleasure to have had the chance to play some music on it.

Great pictures Geoff! your system is absolutely stunning!
Too bad we don't get the sound on the forum Smile
Congratulations!

Geoff, what speaker cable are you using?
Posted on: 03 December 2005 by Geoff P
Mark & Edouard
Thanks for the nice words

Bas
It is a bit misleading in the picture. I am actually using (shock horror) Chord Signature. The bits of wire you see flying loose behind the speakers are no longer connected. They were used to connect up a REL sub at one time but no longer.

Geoff,

It goes without saying - but I'll say it anyway Smile - fantastic pics, you certainly have one of the best looking systems I've seen on this forum! I look forward to (hopefully sooner rather than later) seeing it (and indeed hearing it) first hand Cool

Thanx for the kind words, John & Geoff!

I also like clean and simple systems.

Well, believe it or not, but since my Naim gear is placed in/on the oak-"rack" I'm suffering much less from that annoying bass-overhang.

I can now play tracks from CD's that were almost unlistenable before.

Still,...I'm not completely satisfied with the sound as a whole.
Sometimes I wish I had a bigger soundstage with slightly more depth, and voices that have more body, and bass that goes a bit deeper.

It's kind of a small system with a small sound.

The transparency and detail of the Rogers is quite superb though.

we'll see what the near future brings Smile

So you'll be kissing goodbye to the simple system and adding a whole load of Olive or Black boxes then? Winker

Haha, no way Rackkit. Cool

Because I have a small room, with a small (low-powered) amp, I'm kinda forced to use small speakers too.

I think adding a load of olive/black boxes doesn't change anything to that... Roll Eyes

Sensible approach, Alco.

The music should fill the room. Not the hardware.
