Katie Melua: a new Torch Singer

Groovers
I have recently purchased her album "Call Off The Search."
Beautifully produced by Mike Batt, largely new songs ( well new to me, anyway )but what may surprise is te sheer quality of this womans' voice. She has a pretty good vocal range, usually fairly low but easily capable of some very sweet and liquid high notes. She can convey emotion incredibly well and her cover of Elkie Brooks "Lilac Wine" is, IMO, stunning.
Give it a go. You might just like it.

Mike

I think the album is OK, but unfortunatley I now find her voice a bit irritating, especially the nasal slurring apparent on many tracks.

Mike, I don't listen to Radio2, and yet I feel like I have been subjected to Melua-saturation bombing (level 6 on the Norah scale). It appears she is new to you, so my question is, what aspect of your lifestyle do I need to ape to so effectively protect myself from jingle spamming?

Radio 4 or CDs in the car

I can only hope Katie does this torch singing while wearing non-British Standard nylon nightwear and swimming in a lake of petrol during a firemen's strike.

I take from your continued presence, Nick, that some emergency Deerhoof was thankfully administered in time.

My wonderful wife bought the album a while back. I find much of it quite palatable (particularly "Closest thing to crazy" which I think is destined to become a long term standard).
It's the acceptable face of wife music. After she plays this in the car I feel quite relaxed in putting on some Hendrix or Who.

wife music
It's uncanny isn't it, have the record companies discovered some new kind of mass female mind control? My wife has been persistently 'hinting' for me to get this for weeks.
The thought of enduring it for 2 months 24/7 has so far given me the strength to resist.

This type of music is the unacceptable face of Radio 2.

Does this mean Mike's wife has finally found a way to bring him under control?
It's worse than you think..

I would also suggest that Dido is in this same family of "music for the ladies", a bit like fruit flavoured alcoholic drinks or wine diluted with fizzy water. Pleasant but lacking in substance.
The fact that she describes herself as her own demographic is truely worring.
