Mine does crash, but an uplug from the mains, 60 seconds rest, and a replug does fix it.
It will take about a minute to boot after a power off, are you waiting long enough?
The call centre people at Sky Technical are very helpfull, try giving them a ring.

Thanks for your reply steve, Ive tried unplugging it for about ten mins... plugging it back in and leaving it for ten mins and still just the red standby light..
Looks like a job for the makers!
Thanks

Try switching off the box for longer, a few hours or even over night. I have found this to work.

Hawk,
It must be catching, just had Sky out for the standard £65 to replace the dish, and get a new box due to the same symptoms.
Much better now though, great to have a friendly engineer.

hi guys,
as a matter of interest you do know that after the guarantee runs out as mine has , you can take an extended warranty with sky.
very reasonable it is too!!
i have my sky+ box and old sky box both covered so i dont have to worry for another 3 years.. check it out!
regards, scotty

I don't claim any special knowledge for this - any Sky+ Forum will probably have it as a sticky - & should by rights be in the printed manual, but then I suppose it admits the possibility of Things Going Wrong, which Sky don't seem to like to do. Anyway .....
Just switching the box off and then on again counts pretty much as a soft reset. What you need to do is more of a hard reset in that it will reinstall the Sky+ software [but at the same time keep all your saved programmes and planner entries].
There's also 'housekeeping' which defragments the hard disk, which is useful from time to time - but they don't tell you about that either [and I won't unless you want me to].
Turn the box off at the mains, wait a minute or so, then turn it back on with your finger firmly on the 'back up' button on the box. Keep it there until all the LEDs on the box light up, wait around 10 secs, then remove the finger and wait.... if you have your TV on, it will inform you that software is being installed. Go and make some tea, and after a suitable interval, all should be hotsy totsy.
Pressing the Sky button on the remote when the software has been installed is also sometimes necessary [not sure why].
I had to do this a lot because the LNB [the tarty connector] on my Sky dish seemed to let in water. I've moved now, and don't get the same problem and all is well, although the only thing that bothers me now is a visit from the council demanding to know why I haven't applied for planning permission [I live in a listed building]. If they do, it will be no great loss - Sky+ is a thing of wonder, but increasingly I find I can't be bothered with TV - R4 and a good book [currently Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - which is geekeliciously fab, BTW] does it for me more. Sad git or what..

Another trick to try. Take the Sky card out and carefully rub it with a cotton cloth (or t-shirt). Static electricity can build up on the card which can stop the box from functioning.

This weekend my Sky+ box has decided that I only have about 50% of the HD available for recording. It shows the long bar at the top, but doesn't seem to be able to access all of it. This may have come about from filling it up to the point that a recording failed. Will the hard reset fix this?
Also..
Can you upgrade the HD to a bigger capacity?

Sky+ upgrade
also Sky are now publicising a Sky+ box with 4 times the capacity of the current product - so even more unviewed progrms to worry about <g>

Just upgraded to Sky Multi-room and put my old Sky+ box in the second room and put the new Sky+ 160 box in the lounge, 80 hours recording capacity.
I know it seems a bit OTT, but at least come Xmas time if the programs are any good I've lot's of recording options with the two boxes

Extended warranty! Rip off in my mind.
The usual item that fails is the hard drive. These can be replaced for a fraction of the cost of extended warranty.

Put one of these babies in and get 3 times the recording capacity.
