A weight lifted

I installed a certain mains line conditioner in my Naim system earlier in the week. Despite the general consensus against line conditioners with Naim electronics, I thought I'd give this unit a go because it works in parallel with the line, not in series, and is not supposed to limit current flow or squash dynamics. I was initially impressed with an improved soundstage and sweetening of tonality, and the sound seemed as dynamic as before. Well, last night I found myself dozing off while I was listening. Not good I thought, and I pulled out the conditioner and replaced it with the Wiremold power strip my Naim dealer had supplied. BAM - the music was back! The same record at the same volume setting that was boring me previously came to life again - it breathed and hummed. It felt like a weight had been lifted from the system. This may be a "been there done that" type thing for many on this forum, but what the hay.

Back to the music.

Had a similar-ish experience after spending an hour or two trying a friend's RingMat on the LP12 (as I'm needing a new felt mat I thought I'd try some alternative options first). Initially impressive but just not there. Popped my less-than-perfect felt mat back on and the music came back again.

Funny how it's the little things that make all the difference...

Hi Kevroy,

When I worked in hi-fi retail during the 80's I discovered that I can easily fall asleep to a 'good' system, but poor systems grate on my mind and keep me awake. I fell asleep in several customers' dems, sitting on the floor and propped up against a wall.

Best Regards,

Hi Kevroy,

What kind of line conditioner you installed in your naim system?

It was a Richard Grey Power Co. 400 MK2. It wasn't cheap at $700. May hook it up to my video system.
