Gary,

Anyone else willing to declare possession of an iSight?

Cheers,
Martin

I've got iChat - how does it work?
Posted on: 19 September 2004 by garyi
Hi Alex, you need a web cam and mic

I also think you need 10.3 or above

I'll admit to an iSight... amongst other things!!

Hi Garyi

I have iChat; hope to have an isight within the next month or so, planning to go broadband, which is what is presently holding up the works.

It's going to be fun!

Cheers

John... Cool

This is my last upgrade.... after this my system will be finished...:-)

I plan to get an iSight at around the same time as the G5 and the big monitor. So, next year. Maybe, depending on how the PhD funding search goes...

Gary,

I don't have .Mac and hence no iChat. I take it there's no chance of using another ISP to access it? I'm with Pipex Broadband.

Topcat, ichat is fully compatible with AOL, so goto their website and sign up under AIM. (AOL instant messenger) You don't need their software ichat will handle the rest.

You can then stick your user name and password in ichat and you are away.

I think apple accepted early on that most of us were not oging to pay for .mac and that would have made ichat pointless.

I am on AIM.

Cheers, Gary, I'll get that setup tonight or tomorrow. Now all I need to do is to determine once and for all whether Airport Express will extend a D-Link DI624-based wireless net. Don't want to risk buying an AirEx to find out it doesn't (as streaming iTunes isn't really so important to me)

Gary, I've got 10.3 and AOL. I'll let you know when I've got a webcam (or not).

alex nothing stoping you getting a ichat name and chatting, chatting is good for the soul.

But even scarier for you, you can (if you are into self harm) view other peoples webcams without having one of your own

Hang on a minute - Your'e on AOL for Mac, but AOL don't do Broadband for Macs - and you still have all this fun?!

PS Sadly, this particular Mac is only 10.2.4

Na, I have an AOL 'AIM' account. This is a free service from AOL which allows anyone to chat around the world.

I use NTL, I would never use AOL for anything.

To stop the confusion goto www.aim.com you can set up a chat account there.

ichat requires either this AIM account or a .mac account.

and broadband . . . ?

Incidentally, AOL and NTL are both truly awful - I have NTL phone/telly and AOL web - I know how bad AOL is but its the only ISP which allows me an NTL line, a BT line elsewhere but only one subscription charge . . .

IIRC There are Mac versions of Yahoo IM and ICQ so you can talk to more than just the 3% of people who have a Mac and an iChat account.

IIRC AIM/AOL is the worlds largest IM/chat service. Oh, and they also 'own' ICQ. Then I think comes MS 'messenger' followed by Yahoo.

In this neck of the woods, most seem to favour MS messenger. Pretty much anywhere else, AIM seems to dominate. I say 'seems' as that is my experience of the net and IM chatting.

I use ichat to access my AIM, & ICQ accounts. For anything else, one can use Fire, or Adium, or if you're really desperate, the native versions of MS messenger, or Yahoo. Both being low quality/poor ports across to the mac platform, they don't offer anything like the features and particularly graphics of their Windows parent.

Ichat is by far the best IM chat client I've yet found, closely followed by Adium, which has superb graphics effects, and takes up minimal space on the desktop. BTW, my comment of 'the best' is of course my own humble opinion, but garnered from my use of both my Mac, AND my PC.

Cheers,, Garyi, have already 'added' you, a PM is awaiting you... Cool

Best regards
