I took my D70 on my honeymoon to Singapore and Bali, and I must say that it is great to get the chance to capture some more interesting landscapes and sights than North London has to offer.

I shoot mainly in aperture priority with manual iso settings normally 200, but on occasion shooting in the evening or with the new 70-300 mm ED lens I picked up in Singapore, you need a higher iso, to avoid camera shake (I don't think my new marriage would have lasted the honeymoon if I had taken the tripod with me as well!) and it can be a bit of a pain to change iso every 5 minutes.

I have always avoided auto iso as I do not know what the rules are that the camera uses to change the iso. Does anyone know, as I would not want to find all my pictures shot at iso 1600 the moment it is not bright sunlight.

Any input from fellow D70 owners would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Simon
p.s. I also picked up an SB600 which is a great toy especially in remote mode.

FYI the kit lens supplied with my D70 failed over the weekend - autofocus mech is shafted! Knew the lens was a bit of old tat when i bought the thing!

Let's see what Nikon say shall we??

That is a bit of a pain in the backside.

What sort of use have you thrown at it?

It will be interesting to see what the longevity of the D70 is like, as you are getting a lot of features only seen on the better more exspensive models for a better price, however £700 or so for a body only is a lot to spend on a camera, so it ought to last. As should the lens, I asssume you refer to the 18-70 mm, which if you buy on its own is about £350 I think. Again this is a not insignificant amount of money, but is is not a huge sum for a half decent lens.

I am sure Nikon will look after you.

The "correct" kit lens with the D70 is the 18-70, which is a reasonable quality lens, specifically designed for digital use.

Unfortunately, Nikon have also decided to supply another (cheaper) kit, which has the vastly inferior 28-80 G lens.

I inadvertently bought the latter kit; though to be fair Jessops did eventually allow me to swap for the better one.

mine is the 18-70.
to be fair the optics are fine but the build quality isn't up to my 80-200 f2.8 or my 24mm prime lenses.
you use a camera (or anything for that matter) for long enough and stuff breaks, (my f90 has been repaired 3 times after various abuses over the years - it's stil a fine piece of kit). fortunately this is still in warranty and i'm sure will be repaired/replaced by nikon (although probably slowly Smile)
