Things to do in Edinburgh

Posted by: BigH47 on 28 September 2004

Sally and I are having a couple of night break in half term.
Any must see's and any reccomendations for a good and resonably priced resturant(s)?

TIA

It's been done to death, but the Castle is worth a look if you've never been. Restaurants? For romance (at a price) then book a table at The Witchery up at the top of the Royal Mile. Loads of things to do - a personal favourite pub is The Bow Bar on Victoria Street - great whiskies...

The Scottish museum on Chambers St. is worth a visit. Dynamic earth is ok but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it.

If you do visit the castle (and you should) then also work your way down the Royal Mile as there are lots of little museums (for example a museum of childhood and another in an old tollbooth) and other buildings worth a visit.

A walk to the top of Arthurs seat is also worthwhile.

For resteraunts we like The Apartment on Lothian Road.

Thanks guys Big Grin
We are staying in Apex city in Grassmarket so that seems pretty close to a couple of suggestions.

Heh, I used to study in what is now the Apex City back when it was a uni building... them were the days; in the thick of the grassmarket for pub lunches followed by somewhat inebriated predicate calculus lectures ("Modus Ponens... <hic>")...

Ah, takes me back...

What was the name of that pub with the square bar in the middle, lots of malts, ales, Hoegaarden and Pilsner Urquell on tap? Smile

We went there wth Sybil and were given a tray of sarnies FOC.

I really liked that place.

Steve.

Climb to the top of the Scott Monument on Princess St. Great views over the city and into Fife.

Howard,
If you fancy a very good vegy restaurant
[I'm not a vegy myself but enjoy good food]
Hendersons 94 Hanover St.is highly recommended,
like one or two others here I personally would recommend a trip to Glasgow if possible,it has a slightly different outlook to Edinburgh in as much as all the Museums etc are free Wink, but you pays your money etc.
oldie.

Get pissed, eat a deep fried pizza followed by deep fried mars bar for desert, have a fight and then a heart attack.

Isn't that what you do in Glasgow?

Edinburgh seems more refined and civilised than that.

Sounds like more of a west coast thing that although I've never actually seen anywhere that sells deep fried Mars bars. Most chippies do seem to do deep fried pizza's though, which is a hideous thought.

The only place I've seen actually selling a deep fried Mars bar was in Edinburgh, at the bottom of the Royal Mile.

You need to read some Ian Rankin to disabuse yourself of that notion.

Rebus's haunt The Oxford has always intersted me.
Oxford bar
Aim to go someday.

............. only if you are a tourist and stay in the safe, tartan infested areas.

Both cities have good and bad areas - just like all major cities.

Please do not bang on about the differences, both cities are pleasantly different for their own merits.

I used to have an office right next door to that pub (and with The Cambridge on the other side). It's not worth the visit IMHO.

Try the chippy at the end of Camden Road in Tunbridge Wells. Deep Fried Snickers and mars bars. Our chippy in Crieff does deep fried Pizza as well.

Tom
Actively enjoying it all

If you don't mind Tom I'll leave it till another time.

Try the Brass Monkey pub in the old town (Drummond Street) - friendly service and a unique back room - and theres a good Indian restaurant about 3 doors away.
