Peter Rowan and Tony Rice

Went to see them last night at SF Great American Music Hall. Really enjoyed the concert. They have a recording due for release later this year, should be really good.

I think Tony Rice is probably the best guitar player I have ever seen live.

I once saw Peter Rowan here in the UK play in front of about 50 people, he was utterly spellbinding.

Hi Jez,

Was that solo? He has a great voice and I thought he might play lots of different instruments last night but he was outgunned, instrumentally, of course.

Still on the Panama Red?

I introduced an old girlfriend (1980) to his music - she subsequently became more interested in PR than in me.

Which was understandable!

Nick,
I love bluegrass anyway, but try the album (I think just called 'Peter Rowan') with the track 'Free Mexican Airforce'. You will absolutely love it.

Jeremy,
Yes he played on his own, and really doesn't need anyone else! I can't believe that the likes of Robbie Williams, Phil Collins ad nauseum can fill any stadium you care to mention while a world class talent like Rowan plays his heart out to a half empty pub.

On a hifi note you'll enjoy them too - I remember a couple of his LPs from the late 70s/early 80s as being among the best-pressed and sounding of the time. 'The Walls of Time' and the Flying Fish one that Jez mentioned are wonderful.
