James Taylor Compilation

Posted by: J.N. on 20 June 2004

Just got the imaginitively titled 'The Best Of James Taylor'.

It's a new 'Worst Of' (2003) with 20 classic and new tracks; and is superbly recorded.

Get the USA made version which sports a different cover to the (almost certainly) inferior article made in the EU, and currently on sale.

Warner Bros: R2 73837.

Hi J.N.
which is the best site to buy the US version of the James Taylor cd?

Hi Jim

My favourite is Djangos of Portland, Oregon.

In stock stuff takes a bout a week to get to the UK. Myself and other friends with good systems have found several examples of the EU manufactured article, sounding decidedly inferior.

Clearly if a USA site states 'import' - don't bother; but if it's made in the USA or Canada, it's worth having.

The USA 'Tower' site is well stocked and good for listening to samples, but the postage is expensive.

A&B is a good Canadian site that I've used.

Good luck.

Thanks for the site info. Djangos looks interesting.
I think it's about a year ago when I ordered some cds from the states, I think it was cdnow or amazon. I remember I got charged tax on importing them! I bought 2 which was I am told over the threshold which is £18. Does this still apply? If so do you only order one at a time?

A quick plug for the "or buy used and new" section on Amazon, both .com and .co.uk.

I've bought 5 or 6 albums over the past week from them and they list a range of sellers operating under the Amazon banner (although strictly independent of Amazon). The service has been very quick, a few days at most, most of the CD's have been US or Canadian pressings and the price is generally much lower so no getting clobbered with the £18 threshold.

Yes; as Dave states - the ludicrous £18.00 limit to value of goods, does still apply.

Thus; I order one disc at a time, or two cheapies. I've risked going over the limit and been clobbered by the postie.

I have a feeling that checks on items mailed (as they like to say) to and from the US, have understandably tightened up since 9/11.

Do you know the superb first (eponymous) Marc Cohn album from 1991?

The difference between the EU and USA manufactured versions has to be heard to be believed.

Enjoy the music.

Can't speak to the difference in versions, but wanted to jump in to state that all three of Marc Cohn's released albums are excellent, and the first two in particular are among my all-time favorites. If forum members are not familiar with Marc's work, I encourage you to seek out his catalog.

JT fans who haven't checked out his video called "Squibnocket" should give it a try. It was filmed in a barn on his property, and seems to be a warm-up for going on the road. No crowds, very intimate, lots of insight into the man and his music.

with regards to your comments on the 1st Marc Cohen cd I have the uk version and it sounds wonderful. I also have his others too which sound excellent.
I would like to hear the USA versions but seems so annoying buying the same cd twice. But I have to say his 1st cd really is outstanding.
Also just out of interest I have been checking where alot of my recent cds were made (ie. EU or USA), thre are many that have been made in the US. I use Play.com, cd101 and amazon usually. I would also point out most of my Lucinda Williams cds are US made and sound fantastic.
