DVD & HDD

This is obviously going to be the way to go - specially as the UK High St is beginning to pull out of VCRs.

Also ideal to have the one box to both record off TV and play DVDs.

So far I've been recommended a Panasonic one which records 142 hours on the HDD, but compressed, and costs £599. Anybody got a better one?

PS Sorry Naim, I won't be spending 2K on a DVD player!

Been using a Panny without HDD for six months and am delighted with it. I think the manufacturers are being naughty with the prices they are charging for HDD players. DVD-RAMs are excellent to use and the player has good editing facilities. You can transfer RAM to -R on a PC which will play in the Panny and other DVD players. Or record direct to -R (losing the editing facilities). This is a lot of arsing about but now I'm convinced the technology is good I will be getting a Panny with HDD - when the prices come down. I expect that in the New Year there'll be some bargains to be had. Like I said, I think they're really taking the piss with prices at the moment.

This is defenitely the way forward. And it works. Sure, there are other formats in the pipe but the usage of DVDs (like CDs) will probably ensure that we won't have to trash it all and start again in a few years - hopefully.

One other option I considered as an alternative to upgrading to a HDD DVD recorder was a Freeview box with HDD - but the disks are small and as far as I know you can't edit recordings before transfering them to DVD. So no good at all.

Cheers
