Hows Everyone coping after last night?
Posted by: NB on 14 June 2004
I have to admit that after watching France "steal" a win from us last night that I feel completely drained and struggling to find any motivation this morning.
Hows everyone else coping?

Just fine thanks - I had a great evening. I was at the Chilli Peppers concert and a friend was texting me the footie updates.
The Chilli's announced the France result which resulted in a big cheer from about 95% of the stadium - including me.

"I feel completely drained and struggling to find any motivation this morning."
Why? Because 11 yobs and dimwits from another country were better at knocking a bag of wind around a field than a group of 11 dimwits and yobs from your country? Seems like an over-reaction to me!

Well said. This posturing and posing over football and football results is pathetic.

Couldn't help noticing the distinct LACK of flags of St.George hanging from cars this morning.
Definitely a case of the morning after the night before.

It could be worse mate. Many Scottish fans now hope for Scotland to lose in the hope that it'll make the SFA see the light and replace the manager with someone who has some idea about what he's doing!

You shouldn't feel deflated over something so unimportant. It's just a boring game which has been hyped out of all proportion.
I feel considerably more deflated by the fact that we have just elected Robert Kilroy Silk to the European parliament.

Of course you're allowed to be unhappy, etc. But 'struggling to find motivation'?
If you really think (and I doubt you do...) that 'patriotism' is about putting a George's cross on your, er, BMW and screaming at the TV because one young man has just booted another young man, then that's not the kind of 'patriotism' that holds much interest for some of us.
I suspect that in the past 'patriotism' was not something defined by flag waving or the kind of 'display' that goes on now. It was something that brought people together in extremis. Perhaps the growth of the former is a kind of misplaced nostalgia for the latter.

I wonder what all would have said if we'd won?
I love this nation for its ability to praise the national side's when they have success one moment, and then diss em then next when we lose at something.
And we wonder why other nations have more success...
andy c!

Last night in Manchester a small riot involving the BNP and chants of "reclaim the flag" took place outside the election count after England were defeated. Eight ambulances were present I am told. Perhaps the "simpletons with the flags" (beautifully put elsewhere) might think again.
I can't find this story on the news. I wonder why?

PS: The Welsh are coping really well with that tragic "unlucky" defeat where 11 Englishmen were outplayed for 65 out of 90 minutes in terms of possession; created 3 chances in that 90 minutes and blah, blah, blah!!!
Today feels as good as that morning in May 1997 did. Mind you, that was a false dawn too.

Sorry to hear of your loss
Motivation didn't seem to be an issue with these folks. In fact that seemed to have suffered an excess of motivation

Jay,
I am a little dissapointed, I wouldn't go on the rampage!
No one has mentioned the Rugby as they were not in a winning position with a minute left on the clock! The England team just got comprehensively beaten by a superior side

Somebody has taken it down now though

Sorry. It was my fault
I was out during the match, and I had noticed that the roads were particularly clear, but I got home and my mate Steve was in the living room with the telly on watching the match - which is not only unusual because he doesn't live with us, but he doesn't like footie either!! Anyway...
I grabbed a can of beer from the fridge and joined him for the last 10 minutes. What I didn't understand was why we were 1 goal up when everyone was hudddled around the England goal. Maybe England thought they had finished and were making their way off when they realised the french were still playing - I dunno - but I said to Steve "I bet you a fiver we lose this 2 nil before injury time is over".
Sorry about this - I always do this sort of thing (we went to my daughters school fete in afternoon, where she (we) bought 3 raffle tickets. We came home with a bottle of bubbly, a bottle of white wine and a hamper from a local deli. Needless to say I took her off immediately to get a lottery ticket.)
Anyway, as I was saying, sorry. It was my fault

"I can't find this story on the news. I wonder why?"
Well it's not on any of the major news sites I read even though they carry reports of rioting elsewhere, and it isn't even on Machester online although
Possibly explanations are:
1) It wasn't a big enough incident to be particularly newsworthy.
2) It didn't happen.
3) A shadowy conspiracy of NGOs and media moguls has surpressed the news as part of a systematic pro-English bias.

I didn't think you'd have the time! At least half of your spare time must be taken up by the thread that will never die
Let's look on the bright side. At least we know where all the banned fans live

This is because - despite the efforts of certain sections of the media (ie the rugger-loving ex-public school oafs who seem to populate the broadsheets' sports pages these days)to hype it up - rugby is a minority sport which nobody gives a shit about. Especially when there's a major football tournament on.

More so when you're not winning perhaps?

Well let's face it Steve, you're not exactly doing yourselves proud at rugby either are you?
We did at least win the (rugby) World Cup, but I can't help thinking that with the hard-edged forward-dominated game the All Blacks put together in Carisbrook, a certain 'order' has been restored. We'll really have to pull out all the stops to have a chance of saving some pride in Auckland.
