Viral Cats

Whoops - ballsed up subtle editing of the Cat thread.
The linked video was (reasonably) considered offensive by several forum memebers. Although it is not our role to censor we do have a duty of care. My intention was to post a warning, remove the automatic link and include the explanation below. Apologies for the more drastic action.
The video was a special effects construct. The offence being in the mind of the creator and beholder - rather than reality.
Additionally - if you have objections to postings - contact the moderators rather than taking your own offensive action, however upset you are.

As part of the launch campaign for the new Ford Sportka in June 2003, a dedicated website was developed around the creative idea of a spoof movie.
As part of the website, a suite of materials was proposed by the agency, Ogilvy, including two short videoclips to be made available for download. One of these, featuring a pigeon, was approved and is featured on the website. The agency creative team proposed a second video clip featuring a cat. This was specifically rejected by Ford and Ogilvy. The clip was not released, but has been leaked over the Internet.

We at Ford Motor Company find this unofficial "advertisement" totally unacceptable and reprehensible, and have briefed UK animal welfare organisations.

A full investigation has been ordered by Ford and Ogilvy to determine how this unapproved material found its way into the public domain.

The action in the video clip was totally computer generated, and we would like to assure customers that no animal was harmed in its making.

Welcome to the world of PC, even the cats have rights now.

Tis only a bit 'o' fun

You mean no cats were killed in the filming of that commercial? Damn!

OK. So hands up everybody who thought it was a real cat being decapitated. Good grief we're all adults here, most of us I suspect reasonably intelligent and well educated. We can tell it's only a joke. In bad taste perhaps but a joke nonetheless.

On a day when it's quite possible that 10s of Russian kids are going to die, worrying about a CG cat is frankly risible.

As you say Garyi, it's only a bit of fun, but yes cats do and should have rights. That doesn't make me like them any more though.

So the link to "offensive"/funny advert dissapeared along with the the whole thread?

BB is watching

should tom and jerry cartoons be banned now then??

Christ raw nerve or what. I thought the video, known to anyone who has a life, as a hilarious spoof, would be amusing to all. As stated in the gone thread, we have cats from neighbours fowl (if shit is too strong for some, sorry) the area our children play in and destroy my wife’s favourite hobby (well one of hers but I don't want to offend anyone!) of her garden. They remain, to me, the equivalent of fluffy rats, a health hazard and no more. I've been shot down on here many times for my views, that’s life and ads to the mix of everything. Don’t get any Bill Hicks videos after he was recommended in the comedian thread.

You'll all be relieved to know I've written to Matt Groening to insist that Itchy and Scratchy are removed immediately from any existing and all future Simpson story lines. I have also briefed UK animal welfare orgnisations.

Damn, Marge did that in a past episode and look what happened.

Violin strings anyone?

Well tom as we all know you are super intelligent and special, I on the other hand am from the gutter snipe and I found it hilarious, what a sad state of affairs that two posters can out weigh the majority over such a silly thing, no animals were hurt in the filming of this episode fcs.

I wasn't offended except at the thought that some advertising guy had such low expectations of me.
Surely 99.9% of ad guys make most of feel like that.
BTW 72% of statistics are made up.

Seriously though, did anybody actually think the video was real? If not then what was this all about? It's a shame because I think there was a good discussion going on.

Martin D - rest assured you're not alone there. I agree with everything you said.

My favourite from Paul's link was:

"This is one of the sickest exhibitions of poor judgement and taste that I have ever seen displayed. Suppose it had been a human child, who finding all the doors locked had reached in the sunroof to say get its teddybear. I belong to several major animal rights groups, hope you don't mind but I am going to send the link for this video to them and demand that we we organize some sort of protest. This is just plane evil and to do it and think that you can profit from it, just shows the sort of distorted, out-of-touch judgement that is going on in our corporate boardroons.

Was anybody horrified with the ad that had a man bungie jump into a river and have his head bitten off " thats gonna hurt in the morning". I suppose it's OK as it's a human being not a poor defenceles bird killing shit machine.
