Free PC Protection

What would be the recommended free programs to have in order to protect your PC ?
Might well become a useful (unticked) resource for all on the forum that use PCs (rather than Macs).

A simple note about what works although no mention of grisoft AVG7??
A posting on SlashDot http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=130557&threshold=5&mode=thread&commentsort=0&op=Change and for the those who want the report without the comments (often the best bits) try just the http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm#conclusions.
I use daily visits to MS, Spybot Search and Destroy, Grisoft and Ad-Aware to collect patches and new antivirus definitions and I also use the Mozilla Firefox browser plus for some suspect sites I even go as far as to turn off Java and Java Script.
Every little help helps.

Just a note about AVG. Yes, you can get a free version of it, but you can't update it beyond a few days, so be careful how you sleep at night. I have the full blown version, which costs very little. I sometimes download 3 updates in a day, which shows how hard they are working to stay ahead of the bad guys. This program is the business, picks up everything bad and nukes it. I'm sure someone will argue that another program is better, etc., but in 2 years of continuous use, I haven't had a single virus problem, dispite thousands of attempted intrusions. For me that says it all.

I use AVG freeware. The above post about its upgradeability is wrong.I can update it any time I wish - free. I do this once a week.
