EBay Seller & Paypal surcharges

Posted by: Not For Me on 18 June 2004

I thought EBay UK had banned sellers putting surcharges on for Buyers paying via Paypal from 07/06/04.

My last couple of vinyl wins have had the seller still asking for extra?

The first one I just paid the bid amount and the P&P, and ignored the extra request, and sent an e-mail about it. Now another one has asked for 1 Euro extra.

Now it's not a lot to quibble about, but it strikes me as odd that there is a clear policy that sellers just ignore.

BTW I don't charge when I sell via Paypal.

What to you Ebayers think about this?

It's certainly a bit blurred. I just bought something from a seller who "didn't charge extra for paypal" only to be told there is a 2% surcharge for paying by credit card (which is legal I guess) and that since paypal is funded by credit cards, I'd have to pay it. I can't be bothered arguing with someone who currently possesses, and is in charge of despatching, something that I plan to own, so I've sent them a cheque...

Someone said that if they phrase it as a "discount for cash", there is nothing E-bay/Paypal can do to stop them. I don't know if that's true, but when the dust settles, sellers who don't look after their purchasers will lose out. It will I suppose take a few months for feedback or similar to make an impact.

I suspect that there is sympathy from anyone who has sold on e-bay, received payment by paypal and been shocked at the amount of the charges incurred as a result (like me). It's not the sellers ripping people off, it's e-pay.

I can see a time when everyone will have a "handling charge" rather than a "paypal fee".

Same thing but different..............

I think you will find postage and packing going up a bit (on the smaller items).

and on the bigger ones Wink

Personally, I think that eBay's ownership and constant promotion of PayPal to the disadvantage of other payment systems is bordering on being anti-competitive, but I doubt anybody will do anything about it.

What makes me really mad is the 7-10 working days they take to transfer funds into my NatWest account - that is taking the piss! big-time!!

The greatest pity is that eBay just don't have any real competition to restrict their greed!
