Cheap DVD Player
Posted by: GML on 11 May 2004
I'm about to venture into the world of DVD players. I know nothing about them but budget will be between £80 - £150. I don't need an all singing/dancing machine, it won't be used that often. Is there a particular make that really stands out for that amount or are they all about the same in that price bracket. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Cambridge Audio DVD57 if you want DVD-A (£149) or the cheaper DVD55 if you don't (£119). You must have multi-region.(Richer Sounds).
I had a Samsung DVD709 which was pretty damn good at the time, but the new Cambridge 57 just blows it away. Blacks are really black, and no scan lines. Great machine. It's PAL progressive scan too. Unbeatable.
Forgot to say that if you have JPEG digital photos on a CD, it will slide show them for you on the TV.

Budget DVD players start around £40-£50 so you should get a decent one in your price range. My son has a cheap Bush one that was £50 but if I was spending more I'd probably be looking for a Philips or Toshiba player.

I have a Pioneer DV-350, which cost £100 when I got it more than a year ago, and which I last saw going for about £50.
It's difficult to say how good it is, as I have nothing to compare it with, but I certainly don't feel a need for a better player when watching widescreen movies on my 14" TV!

Hi
Asda has a Pacific brand one for about £30, it will play anything you throw at it and is multi-region via a simple hack from the remote.
regards
Jim

I got a Pioneer 565 from sevenoaks for £150 - partially to get a newer player than my earlier Toshiba but also to give DVDA/SACD a whirl. Clearly it's musical performance is limited to say the least (certainly compared to my CD3.5/flatcap I use for CD) but I could hear what the new formats were about and picture is pretty decent.
What I have done now though is bolt on my old Cambridge Dacmagic from an earlier system and blimey!! Cd is still pretty poor but the other formats are not bad at all

I can second Rasher's recommendation for the Cambridge Audio DVD57.
Everything you could want, and a LUMINOUS remote to boot - if you think about it, that's a very neat idea, even if the buttons are arranged in an incomprehensible grid [why don't DVD designers take the Sky remote with them to bed and have unwholesome, perverted and yet fulfilling dreams as a consequence?]
Fabulous cheap DVD players abound. Apart from b[r]aaaa nd loyalty considerations, am I alone in thinking Naim might be onto a loser? Let's hope their unit sales/profit margins are viable.
