As a small business owner I think small business owners like to whinge about this far too much. We set up our own businesses because we choose to, if we're successful we make a good living. OK, there are downsides, crap employees being one of them, but owning your own business, stresses and risks included, is far preferable to working for somebody else. Most employees IME are anything but crap (maybe my experience is based on working in an industry where technical skills are prized, and good employees can demand a decent remuneration and good working conditions). Treat people well, don't be a bureaucratic tosser, and most people respond with loyalty and dedication. OK, sometimes people find a better salary elsewhere and move on, and that can be awkward, but that's what any employer should expect to happen. It's rarely the end of the world when an employee leaves a company, and if it is, then the owner is at fault for not running the company properly.
