I would select Voting Record - Dennis Skinner MP, Bolsover for his sound ideas and workrate. I would balance this with Voting Record - Michael Portillo MP, Kensington & Chelsea for his user-friendly acceptable face of capitalism persona and a sop to the mass of slightly left leaning tories now in power.

I wonder if John Smith would have invaded Iraq? I am reasonaby sure he wouldn't have dreamed of it. A great choice.
However, I remain to be convinced that Gordon Brown should be included in this imaginary cabinet for at least the following reasons:
1) He withdrew the dividend tax credit, which reduced income to charities and pension funds. Madness in light of the current pensions crisis.
2) He didn't resign when we invaded Iraq. Blood is on his hands too.
3) Like many government ministers he is another London hater.

Adam Smith or JMK? Have you read their works?

Taking Rasher's suggestion of Nicolas Parsons we should add Tony Slattery (thinking in terms of Just a Minute).

Well I am surprised.Smith was a good micro man;his ideal post would be at the DTI.The Chancellor should be a macro man and whilst Keynes would have the brains (with plenty to spare) if he were alive he would not be a good choice.Keynes was a genius and knew it;he would drive his cabinet fellows mad even if they understood what he was on about.I can't see keynes accepting the notion of collective responsibility either.Galbraith is another man I rate very highly but he is too civilised for the bearpit. My choice must be David Ricardo-as well as coming up with original economic ideas,he could withstand pressure (he pissed his dad off when he left his faith) and he was truly international in his outlook. To make his case complete, Ricardo was an MP-not for very long and he did buy his seat.Cheers Tony
