The One and the Only

When we go for an evaluation of a sound system or a component, we take our music with us, so we can hear different instruments, voices, PRAT, imaging and so forth.

If you were allowed to take only one disc with you, which one would it be?

I would take with me The Piano Music of Alberto Ginastera Vol 1 / Eduardo Delgado, piano / MA recordings M038A. It is an excellent close miked recording of a music which varies a lot in pace, dynamics and frequencies. If the system can reproduce properly this very difficult music of a very demanding instrument, the chances are that it would be a good system.

The LP I always use to demo a change to my system with (or demo a new piece of kit at a dealers) is Japan's Tin Drum. One reason is that it has been with me since 1982 when it was released and thus I know it very well but the main reason is it has a great mix of electronic/synthesised sounds and acoustic (eastern) instruments. This is particularly true of the percussion (it has some of the best cymbal sounds ever). Also David Sylvian's vocals are recorded really well. The better my system gets the more this album grows and grows - and keeps revealing something new!

Power Windows by Rush. It's suprising how many systems can't time it - including some of my previous ones!

Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (Gardiner); if the system can handle that it can handle anything! I usually take some solo piano music too - typically Brendel's new Beethoven recordings.

It would probably be Deacon Blue's Fellow Hoodlums. Variously paced tracks, some great vocals and magically driving bass lines.

Begs the question how do you know its "timed" or equally "mis-timed".
This not my favourite Rush album, some insight may help to explain why.
