online property research

Posted by: Mekon on 24 August 2004

I've been looking online for info on some houses I've been looking at. Seems like you can find out a fair bit for free, but I wondered if anyone had found anything more useful. I am currently using:

Homecheck for area and risk information.
Land Registry for current property prices and Register/Title plan.
ONS neighbourhood for more than I will ever want to know about the neighbourhood.
Provisor for price trends.

I think I am too nervous to do my own conveyancing. Am I wussing out or being sensible?

Conveyancing is not difficult. We've done it three times. Leaving it to an expert usually means a spotty solicitor's clerk - the only input from the solicitor being a signature and a large bill at the end.

Beware solicitors.....

My elderly parents are moving to a smaller property. Their solicitor initially quoted a total of £950 but bumped this up to £3000 at contract exchange. The move was no hassle than usual and the chain was very short, but the main delays were caused by this solicitor. When queried, they said, "if you can afford to pay the estate agents 1.75% you can afford to pay us £3000 - and, no, you cannot have this itemised until after completion".
Looks like one for the Law Society ....
