Toots and the Maytals gig

Anyone else caught him on the current tour?
He's been on my list of must sees for the better part of a decade, so having the chance to catch him in Brighton meant ignoring the current state of my credit card, the fact my research funding ends in September, and the slight problem that I currently have had no job offers. Oh well, had to be done.
I didn't expect to be looking at my watch and considering leaving early at a Toots gig. The hits were there, and he treated us to bits of Reggae Got Soul, which is my missus' favourite album. Sadly, they all came across like a comtemporary christian music cover versions. His voice was there, no doubt, but the band were baggier than a first attempt at a camberwell carrot. Each song was ruined by awkward tempo changes and extended by lengthy jams that showcased the band's inadequacies. He'd also decided to go in for ill advised crowd participation that wouldn't have been out of place at a 5 year old's party. No once did a song display the economy that marked his early stuff. The music didn't strut, so much as hobble.
If I was forced to say something good about it, it would be that Aces Crew were decent in the support slot.
