Back to basics !

Posted by: Bob Edwards on 03 October 2000

Hey all---

Does anyone else ever look back at when we started out--with a LP12, Nait 1 and Kans or variations on the above--and wonder if it all wasn't more fun that way ? I have swapped email with a couple folks who seem to agree and am curious if anyone else feels that way.

The system I have now is infinitely (hyperbole alert !) better than my first system, and when I play records it is great, but I am considering chucking the whole thing and going back to a much simpler systemm--getting back to basics, if you will.

Comments//discussion ?

I like this description as well.

I was listening to a track I had heard several times this week (new CD) and something was wrong. The balance was off to the left. I immediately jumped up, frowning - had I killed a driver ? Pre-amp playing up ? 'Speaker cables come loose?

Some quick cable checking and the tedious "Clicks full left ... clicks half left ... pulse plasma rifle in the 40W range" .. erm - OK so not the last one - test CD experience.

Wander round the room checking everything.

Eventually turned round and realised that I had moved my "sweet spot" listening chair to water THE plant (checked out as non-resonant-vibrator across the frequency range plant - very special)and had not moved it back.

DOH!

Ratio : 10 minute frantic panic : 3.5 hours listening.

Probably about right !

Also, I have to agree with the questioning of back-to-basics. I LIKE the sound of my 'cast off' hi-fi (lives at my girlfreinds) BUT I have no intention of living with it for any large length of time 'cos I now know what I CAN have.
