Half full and half empty-iPod
Posted by: Ron Toolsie on 31 May 2004
Well after spending about an entire month of loading disks nightly on my 40 Gig iPod, I have FINALLY got the bastid more than half-full. The first pass selecting disks from my 1200+ collection managed to fill only about 1/3 of its capicity. I went back on second pass, being rather less selective, and have now filled up 18.59 Gigs of space, with 18.57 Gigs free. It as the Marshall Tucker Bands 'Searchin' for a Rainbow' that finally tipped the balance.
I have even burnt LP's to CD-R then dumped them onto the iPod (where they sound fantastic with my ER 4P earbuds). It is indeed a formidable task to carry around the majority of your collection in your shirt/jacket pocket- a task that requires about 8-10 large shipping boxes with a collective weight of several hundred pounds.

Hi Ron
What bit rate did you use to record them?

The standard Apple AAC encoding. The higher quality AIFF was fractionally better sounding, but used fully 10x more disk space- which for my applications (having an immense amount of widely diverse material literally at my fingertips) was counterproductive. Later on this week I will start seriously burning some of my cherished vinyl onto CD-R and thence to the iPod. A suprising bit of the textures cast by the Helikon SL/Aro/Prefix is transmitted via CD-R->AAC encoding. Its been a while since I used a Walkman, but I know I am getting a higher quality signal here then back in the old days with the Ittok/Karma going via 42/Hicap to Aiwa tape deck. And instead of having 45 minutes of uninterrupted music I have hundreds of hours worth, all of course at the mercy of battery life which is still much greater in the iPod than the AA-gobbling Walkman.

Slightly OTT-has anyone seen or heard an iPod Mini yet? I thought it was due to be launched in the UK in April but have not seen any here yet. USA got them yet?

Hi Bruce,
They had em in San Francisco when I was there in March. It looks super cool, but only holds 4GB, and costs about the same as a 15GB iPod, so I can't really see the point until prices tumble to the sub £150 mark.

Hi Bruce.
Just returned from San Francisco from my honey moon, the task now is to stay awake until this evening!
Of course I took the holy trek to the apple store in SF and its a great store, they let you use the net all day for nowt, a nice touch.
All the minis were there. It uses two processors at 80mhz each as opposed to the single 133 chip in the ipod. As such its very quick, and as it uses a 4 gig micro drive instead of a harddrive, access to music is super super fast, its sounds very good to. Although to be fair I was listening on Boses head phones.
Yes the price does closely match the 15 gig pod, but its a different beast and importantly, all the 128 to 256 meg devices I saw on the market were around 70 dollars cheaper, so for your bucks you get a better device which holds vastly more information.
As it stands I bought a few things in the store, a midi keyboard and walcom tablet, things I have always desired and which are around half price state side.
One enduring memory of SF will be the taste of the water, it was f**king awful!
