Scuba diving
Posted by: count.d on 29 July 2004
After many years of dreaming about scuba diving, I'm going to have some lessons and hopefully a diving holiday to follow.
Before taking the plunge, is there any advice anyone could give on equipment choice or any general advice at all?
I know it's an open question, but any advice appreciated.

Congrats Rockingdoc!
On a side note - my fiancé is training with the bsac at the mo, but had an unfortunate mask clearing incident while pool training.... nose/lung full of water - surfaced with a swelling throat and struggling to breath......a perfectly natural body reaction.....but a bit frightening.
It has knocked her confidence a fair bit, she hasn't trained since, but still wants to do it.
Any thoughts/advice I can pass on.....??

arf005 - we've probably all done that one. Mask-clearing is just as much a coordination as a confidence thing, and feels wierd the first few times. Advice - get back in the water, take your time and try to relax. The experience to come is more than worth it.

I agree, it just needs a little practice. She can practice in her depth using a snorkel, just blowing the air through her nose to clear it.
In the real world, getting a mask complety kicked off is a pretty rare event, but having to shift a little bit of water from the mask on a dive is pretty much a certainty.
