White van man (probably revisited) is not a myth
Posted by: Misguided Fool on 15 October 2004
On the way to work this morning I was verbally abused and threatened by White Van Man.
I was turning left from a T-junction into a line of almost stationary traffic. To the right, about 100 yards away, was a white van. As the traffic was almost stationary, the van was a goodly distance away and was slowing down, I decided that there was sufficient time to pull into the queue.
The driver of the van proceeded to flash his lights at me and sound his horn? In normal response to this (probably shouldn't have really), I flicked him the vees. The next thing I knew he was out of his van, threatening to smash my face in, hurling other abuse and banging on my window. My response was to roll my eyes and ignore him. As he left he kicked the back of my car. I then shouted to him to grow up and stop being so soft.
He then followed me to the next junction as close as he could. As I was turning right he purposely drove his van into my passenger side door mirror in an attempt to break it. Luckily he only glanced it and did very little damage.
Fortunately, I got his registration and make of the van. I called the police, who then informed me that as nobody had stopped to be a witness there was little they could do, but take my statement. As I made my statement, the police person I was talking told me that as there was physical violence threatened and attempted criminal damage, this was not a standard road rage incident and that they would like to me make an official statement. There would probably still be nothing they could do, as it was my word angainst his, but at least they could be prepared if he did something like this again.
I realise that I probably shouldn't have flicked him the vees, and shouldn't have told him to grow up. But, do these things and getting one car ahead in a queue of traffic, really warrant behaviour like this?
This is the second incident with a white van man, that I have had in as many weeks. The last one was a fellow hurling abuse at me because I was in his way. Fair enough you might say... However, he was driving down a one-way street in the wrong direction.
Just wondering about other peoples experiences with road rage and the infamous White Van Man...

mark, you have my sympathies.
these guys are beyond belief.
you must have had quite a shock.
pity the name of the company wasn't on the van, or some other way of tracking down who he was.
quite often these vans are hired, and have the name of the hire company on the back, and you can get them that way.
my favourites are the trucks that have "how well am I driving", and a contact phone number on the back.
I can't remember the number of times I've rang the number and told them exactly what I thought!!!
hope the rest of your day is more pleasant.

Sorry to hear about your incident. Even if it comes to nothing it does leave a bad taste in your mouth.
I nearly had a run in with a WVD about a year ago when I used to work in London.
I was walking back from a meeting with a colleague of mine, when we got to a zebra crossing at a crossroad. I looked both ways as i know what the traffic in town is like, but my view was obscured by a lorry parked on my side of the road, so we proceeded to cross, only to have to jump back when a WV went came flying round the corner at speed, obviously ignorant to the fact that there was a pedestrian crossing there.
The guy looked out of the window at me with a glare and I just shrugged my shoulders at him and gave him an exasperated look. Hardly an aggresive sign I feel.
Anyway, unfortunately we were walking down the same road that he was driving on and he saw this and slowed right down, continuing to look out of the window at me and my colleague, (who as it turns out had no idea any of this was going on).
About 25 yards up the road he stopped, and got out as did his mate in the passenger seat, both of them staring back down the road at me. They went round to the back of the van and one of them got a crow-bar out, still looking at me.
Now they were parked on the side of the road we were walking on, and, on point of principle I was damned if I was going to cross over, and give them the satisfaction that they had put the wind up me, which to be honest, they had a little. I've been doing karate for 8 years and hold a 2nd dan black belt, but certainly have better things to be doing with my time than have some twat swinging a crow-bar at my head. Still, I was confident enough that if it did kick off, I could defend myself and my colleague (my brief-case will defend me from the crow-bar!!) so we continued walking.
We walked straight passing and nothing happened (fortunately), and when I mentioned the events to my colleague his response was "what white van?".
Just goes to show the mentality of some people on the road, and although it came to nothing, that sort of intemidation is really not on. It's certainly not limited to White Van Man either, and whatever it is that motivates someone to jump out of their car and start flinging abuse in your direction, I really don't understand.

Hi,
You should make the complaint. If this idiot is doing this to you, then he could be doing it to others. If this escalates then actual serious injury could be caused to someone. The officer was quite right re the potential offences committed outlined to you.

The world was nearly one White Van Man short today.
I was on the M25 just coming up to the M4 junction in lane 2 and just moving into a large space in lane 1 to turn off.
Ahead of me in lane 1 was a large articulated lorry which signaled to pull out and proceeded to pull into lane 2 as he wished to stay on the M25. At the same time a WVM was moving rapidly across from lane 4 in a very late manoeuvre to leave the M25 at the junction. The space the WVM was heading through was now occupied by the lorry. Fortunately for all concerned, lane 3 was empty so there was room for WVM to veer out again narrowing missing the lorry. He then slammed on his brakes and continued to cross over the remaining lanes behind the lorry (but still in front of me) - I had slowed right down not wishing to be involved in any carnage.
Not road rage but certainly terrible aggressive driving on the part of the WVM.

Wow this is a bit scary. A few years ago a white van pulled out in front of me without looking, I tooted the horn, he pulled back in and I carried on past him. I noticed that he was right behind me all the way to the college where I work but thought nothing of it until he pulled into the car park behind me. He jumped out of the van mouthing obscenities and looked as though he was planning to give me a good kicking. Fortunately I'm not small so he pulled up abruptly when I got out of the car and he saw how big I was. He accused me of wreckless driving and as I wasn't in the mood for such stupidity first thing in the morning I merely replied "Read the f***ing highway code you idiot" and proceeded towards work. I then heard a bang and on returning to the car found he had kicked my back lights in. I almost lost my temper, and grabbed his keys with the intention of making sure he couldn't leave until the police arrived. However as he looked like one of the cast of Deliverance I decided it wasn't really safe to mess with this sort of character as you don't really know what they're capable of so I let him go.
The police arrived shortly after I called and took the details, including the van registration number. They got back to me an hour or so later, told me they had interviewed the driver who denied everything, and said they could do no more. I pointed out that my fingerprints would have been on the van and steering column, and there must have been traces of my rear lights embedded in his boots but they still refused to take it further. I wish now I'd pursued it but at the time I was quite shaken so let it lie. Needless to say my confidence in Plod was a bit dented after that.

Some years ago a van driver took exception to me overtaking him on my motorbike (well o.k. I cut in a bit quick), in heavy commuter traffic driving along the Strand. He gave chase, and began to drive increasingly dangerously in his attempts to catch me. A glimpse of his face and gestures at the lights convinced me that he didn't just want to overtake me, so I decided to get away. He pursued me over Waterloo Bridge doing at least 70 mph. The chase continued across London all the way to the Elephant, by which time he had driven on the pavement and over several sets of red lights.
My girlfriend was on the back and I was having to take risks, even on a bike, to keep ahead.
In the end I flagged down a Police car, who looked bored and disinterested in my story until he ran up, grabbed me by the throat and threw me across the Police car's bonnet. They got interested then and helped him into a pair of handcuffs.
I was called as witness to a Crown Court hearing some months afterwards, but fortunately didn't have to appear as he was convicted on several counts of GBH and attempted murder against other parties. The Police just wanted my little incident as a back-up.
So the message is, you just never know what kind of animal is driving that van in front of you, and when enraged they will do anything to get you. My guy must have known the Police were after him, but didn't care. I try to keep my V-signs to myself now.

They'd have to learn to read first.
Actually, although never a van driver, I did work for a few summer months riding shotgun on a lift&tow breakdown-truck. I became an overall wearing, grease besmirched, blasphemer, interested only in sinking lunchtime pints and pies, then driving around all afternoon leering and whistling at girls.
Hmmm. Wonder if this is a good time for a mid-life career change. I rekon I could still handle a tyre-lever.

Some worrying stories guys, and you never do know what sort of person you're dealing with. This does however work both ways, as demonstrated by a story my karate instructor has recounted to me.
About 10 years ago he was at a training seminar in London, and one of the top students, who was normally at all of the training camps and was due to be at this one, had not turned up. He eventually came in about 3 hours late, looking rather harrased, made his apologies and left again, saying he'd be back later.
It turned out that he'd been on the receiving end of a road rage attack in which two guys ran his car off the road, and the got out of their car, one carrying a baseball bat.
Not wishing to sit in the car to receive a pummeling, our karate chap jumps out of the car a proceeds to defend himself from the onslaught. Unfortunately for the chaps with the baseball bat, they didn't realise that the chap they'd run of the road was 6 foot 3, 16 stone and a 5th dan in karate. Even their 3rd mate in the car couldn't help them out.
Subsequently he spent all afternoon in the police station (he called the rozza's as soon as he had finished teaching the scummy little bastards a lesson). No charges were pressed.

Higher up in the scale of rod ownership than the wvm is the vehicle displaying the
Motorway Maintenance
sign
These vehicles and their drivers and passengers can go where they like at whatever speed they like and also park wherever they like - a truly enviable sub species.

the best ones to wave at are hitch-hikers thumbing for a lift.
if you really want to piss them off, either wave at them, or stick your thumb up in response to their thumbing for a lift, as if to say "well done, mate", or "walk, you f*cker, it'll do you good".
the look on their faces is priceless!

This isn't a driving issue.
We all know of folks who will happily let you pass in front of them in the supermarket checkout queue but won't give you an inch of space on the road
WVM is a different animal entirely. The guy in the van wearing the reflective clothing with the hard hat under his seat who physically and verbally assaults other road users is the same guy who pushes a glass in your face in the pub if you as much as catch his eye.
They are basically thugs in every waking moment of their lives given the slightest excuse, and as such they should be rounded up, lined up against a wall and shot.
However if we did that houses wouldn't get built, shops wouldn't be fitted out, and holes in the road wouldn't... yeah, on second thoughts, shoot the bastards!

Steve.

My own WVM experience
And I wasn't even driving...
I was walking along the Wolverhampton Road in Stafford towards the M6 at J13 because a friend who works in Wolverhampton was coming to pick me up and give me a lift home. I was walking along the right-hand side of the road when I saw his car coming towards me. I put my hand up so that he could see it was me. He indicated left, pulled in and I opened the passenger door.
Due to oncoming traffic the traffic behind him led by, you guessed it, WVM was brought to a standstill for a few seconds as I picked up a couple of items resting on the front seat and threw them in the back before sitting down. Just as I was closing the door WVM driver yells,
"Fookin' 'urry oop will yer!"
As we set off I gave him the bird through the rear window.
At the next set of traffic lights he drew alongside us, wound down his window, looked at me as though his head was about to explode and shouted to me,
"Eeef yow do tharragen al brek yer fookin' nawus!"
This was not a mid-Staffs accent but was more West-Mids/Brummy.
I just smiled sweetly at him while his mate squirted some water at my window. The window was closed.
What would he have done if we were turning right with oncoming traffic?
That would have taken considerably longer.
Regards,
Steve.
