Debian - ok for a Linux newbie?

Posted by: Mekon on 15 November 2004

I've given Mandrakesoft Move a whirl, and it seemed useable enough, so I am about to give Debian a go. I've gone for Debian over the other distros as it includes all the other free software I want.

Does anyone else here use Debian, and if so, would you recommend it? How painful is the installation process?

I guess it depends what you call a "newbie" but I wanted something suitable for an smtp box at work and tried a few linux distros and found Debian really really painful to get anywhere on.

I ended up with Suse which seemed to give enough ease of use as a newbie without bogging me down with loads of GUIs and things I really didn't want to be installing on a server.

Of course, YMMV.

Hi Mekon,

I'd suggest Mandrake 10 (not Move). Debian can be really frustrating for a newbie.
