Top Biscuits

Posted by: jlfrs on 26 October 2004

As it's pretty slow here I'm compiling a list of the best and worst biscuits known to man and woman.

Here's my top 5 best in no particular order:

1/Gypsy Cream
2/Bourbon
3/Rocky,(plain and caramel to count as one choice)
4/Penguin,(a classic)
5/Chocolate chip n' Hazlenut Boasters

Top 5 worst are:

1/Malted Milk,(eeurgh)
2/Happy Faces
3/Any Belgian butter biscuits
4/Rich Tea
5/Garibaldi,(squashed fly biscuits)

I'd be interested to see if any more "classics" make it in but then again, it's presumptuous of me to even presume that anyone will bothered to read and reply to this......

Anything made by Fox's, particularl the Classic range. See here.

As a trivia note, a childhood friend of mine was sacked from Fox's Biscuits for making penis-shaped biscuits out of the biscuit mixture cuasing a mixture of offense and hilarity amongst his co-workers further down the production line. This was of course *extremely* childish.

Matthew - sounds like one for Ann Summers,(not that I'd want to dunk one in my mug of tea!)

I'm a fan of Fox's, particularly the Rocky range and the thing that marks them out is their distinctive "crunch". The Classic isn't a bad biccy but the Crinkle Crunch, Crunch Creams and Classics seem to have a nasty habit of disintegrating when bitten into and falling apart if submerged for too long in a cuppa.

Otherwise, I'd flag them as a candidate for a top 10 entry,(not that it's upto me to decide but it's my intention to produce a definitive list as the end of this thread if A/enough people contribute and B/if everyone's still interested!

I may then follow up with top 5 best and worst sweeties, ice lollies, beer and packaged meal lists if business has not picked up here at work significantly.....

Jaffas. They have close to zero fat content and can therefore be eaten by me by the bucketload.

Anyone saying they're technically a cake should be helpd in utter contempt.

Rather partial to a Fig Roll.

Until this week Aldi did a nice in line in "Toffeepops"; millionaire shortbread on the cheap. Smile

Mmmmmm......Take one packet of Ginger Nut's, a cup of coffee, and dunk away untill you either cant eat any more or you run out of coffee. Yum yum.

4/Penguin,(a classic)

a vastly inferior version of Tim Tams.

What a mine of information. I rarely cruise the biscuit isle at my local supermarket, but for cherry Jaffa cakes I may have to change my habits ( not sure if the 'Jaffa' bit really fits with a cherry version though).

Also I have to say I think Tim Tams are over-rated (quite nice, but over-rated). Even if you do do that sucking tea through them thing.

My favourite:

Malted Milk,(yummy, esp chocolate ones)
Garibaldi
Ginger nuts

I loath:

Bourbon - absolutely discusting
and
Jaffa cakes

Mind you, I rarely eat any biscuits now, as I'm trying to lose a bit of weight. (So I guess I don't belong in this thread.)

All biccies are lovely. The only ones that aren't are the fraudulent ones that have no fat and sugar or chemicals in them.

I'd nominate:

Bourbons
Custard Creams
Plain cohocolate digestives
Orange Club (though they were better when the chocolate was thicker)

and, let's not forget Alan Partridge's favourite, Boasters: "an assortment of chocolate and hazelnuts compacted onto a sweet oatmeal base - quite buttery"

Uh-huh. A "friend" eh?

Regards,
Davie (Tunnock's Caramels)

P.S. I've just been for more dental work today - mainly because of my British sweet tooth.

It's a toss-up:

For biscuits, I'd second the choice of plain choc. digestives. Best with a mug of tea.

But for cookies, homemade (still warm) oatmeal chocolate chip with an ice cold glass of milk.

Dan

p.s. I'm seeing the dentist tomorrow - ugh.

I must throw a curve ball here: Rolo biscuits. If you haven't tried them they are tremendous!

I'm still not sure that a jaffa cake is technically a biscuit as I don't believe it would get through the dunk test too well which is a pre-requisite for biscuit supremacy as far as I'm concerned.

I still like Cadbury's chocolate Fingers but the giant ones just don't cut it IMO. How about iced rings? They're super sweet but hold fond memories of my childhood, as do ginger snaps, even if they're a little unexciting compared to today's more sophisticated confections.

I have also thought of another revolting item which is the Oreo: a truly rank biccy which has crossed our shores and infiltrated our supermarket shelves through stealth.

Someone mentioned Fig Rolls in an earlier post: I thought these had been killed off years ago - who still makes them?

The Jaffa Cake is one of my favourites.....

....but the biscuit/cake thing involved a High Court case to determine the VAT treatment of them (a chocolate bisciut is standard rated where a cake is zero rated). I think that the High Court, after McVities had baked an enormous Jaffa Cake for their consideration, came to the conlclusion that the Jaffa Cake was, in fact, a cake and thereby saved McVities an enormous VAT assessment.

I tried some Green & Black's organic chocolate biscuits the other day - delicious.

Home-made flapjack made with Scotts porridge oats and Lyles golden syrup. Very tasty but a bugger to scrape off the baking tray if you accidently forget to take them out of the oven in time (again).

Melomakarona (Greek honey biscuits), preferably home made.
