iSight - why should I buy?

Posted by: Top Cat on 12 November 2004

Hi folks,

I quite fancy an iSight for my Powerbook. Don't know quite why, but I have that nerdy urge to acquire one.

However, I'm finding it difficult to justify. I've an £18 money off voucher burning a hole in my email account to be spent with Apple by the start of next week, and I think that if I am ever going to get one of these I'll get it now.

Convince me, iSight fans. Or, talk me out of it (everyone else?).

My only real justification is that if I end up getting my research grant to do the PhD, I'm going to hopefully persuade the uni to get a couple so that I can tele-study (and have really geeky virtual meetings).

So, the £100-ish question is: should I or shouldn't I?

I have one and have to say its been a real boon for Sheila more than anything as she frequently calls home with it (Her dad has a duel mac with isught.

As usual with apple, just plug it in, ichat will do the rest for you.

It can also be used with Skype as it has a built in microphone, which has other uses as well.

Downsides? Well I havn't actually successfully hooked up with PC users with it. I don't think its a problem with the isight just ichat vs PC in general. Although there is plenty of documentation to say it should work, I just have not been successful.

To use one, you will need broadband, its not recommended, its a requirement.

One other thing, its well cool!

Separation from loved ones or finding Leslie Grantham an inspirational figure seem the only good reasons to me ......
