Saddam facing the death penalty....

Unfortunately Beckham's taking it.
Sorry.
Sorry.

I've already heard that joke. Yes it was funny.
In all seriousness though, from a moral POV Saddam should not face the death penalty as this will send out the wrong signals of living by the sword etc... and he'd likely become a martyr. The death penalty is morally wrong, IMHO.
However, once he's despatched, terrorists or insurgents who support him would have no opportunity to hold hostages to gain his release.
Regards,
Steve.

Steven,
I've got very mixed feelings on this. Normally I disagree with the death penalty but I'm concerned that as long as he's alive he could be some sort of rallying point for his supporters.
What's absolutely vital though is that the whole thing is conducted in as open and correct a manner as possible.

Tom
Me too - but I wouldn’t care if he was executed, he's a horrible man

If the law of Iraq says death then that's fine by me.

Me neither. But it's vital that justice is SEEN to be done.

I take it that you don't mean a public execution.
By "despatched" I meant executed.
The extremists will regard any trial as being for show with the outcome decided in advance. We all know Saddam is guilty of crimes against humanity so if he is to be despatched it perhaps should be done without trial - quietly and quickly.
Of course, now that the wheels of justice have begun to turn this would reflect badly on our democratic and due-process value systems and as such would be hypocrytical.
Perhaps with hindsight, Saddam should have been shot in the head (rather than punched) upon his discovery.
Regards,
Steve.
