Sorry Insurance Again

Posted by: Martin D on 25 November 2004

Sorry chaps, I think this was covered a while ago but cant find it now. We need to swap insurance, or at least compare some companies due to a change we will make to our mortgage. I was wondering how people got on and with which insurers you went with. The main thing that springs to mind are things like at what price do you have to start itemising your kit, instead of the “contents up to £55,000” or whatever, and also things like the treatment of CD’s and Vinyl – obviously small value per item but I guess the replacement value of my music would be in the £10-£15k mark easy, at the new high street prices etc.
Many thanks in advance

I'm afraid you cannot generalise with insurance companies.

They all have their own ways of working, some just use total contents value and have high risk items as a proportion of that, others would ask you to itemise your collection and most would be somewhere in between...

Having worked for a general insurer (the one advertised by Michael Winner, though that wasn't the reason I left) I can say that you probably won't get much sense from the teletubbies if you try and ask the questions about value of hi-fi (a £500 Sony setup being considered top of the range). Its very unlikely that you will find someone who actually knows what they are talking about if you deviate too far from their prepared script and the underwriters are generally not available for comment.

We use Zurich who didn't laugh in our faces when I mentioned the cart and arm.

we have thankfully never had to claim so can't comment on that side.

I had to give value and serial numbers fo everything, and each item was insured for its value.

Try Hiscox -
Hiscox Online site

They do blanket amount insurance - premium based on postcode, amount and excess - will give you worldwide cover.

Direct Line - My current insurers and have been for a number of years. I am on a value based policy rather than a bedroom based policy. The only requirements I had were supplying an initial inventory of records and cds. We sis have a visit from the underwriter's representative to ensure that we had estimated values reasonably and that security measures were adequate. I had a claim two/three years ago (catridge - but that is another story) and this was settled promptly and without fuss.

Having recently re-mortgaged, Abbey National came up with a very competitive quoute for the buildings/contents insurances which again was value based but had no limits on high value items or collections.

Well thanks guys.
Ended up with Hiscox - completely painless to swap. The quote was about what we pay now but we found ourselves undervaluing our current situation so this was good VFM. Good recommendation all round, and you can pay monthly for no additional fee. And as mentioned you don’t need to itemise anything, I was expecting the “what’s a Troika” thing but its not needed. Just for extra proof we borrowed a friends digi camera and took pix of everything just in case there’s a query.

PS your insured items are covered anywhere in the world, even in an unattended vehicle.

Cover for goods in the unattendedd vehicle - the goods must be hidden from sight, the car must be locked and the entrance must be forced - ie damage done to the car.
