Anyone managed to do this? If so what S/W and setup did you use? Simple with short words please!
Thanks in advance.

I have done this using Pinnacle Studio 9, from there, I can "capture" the VHS video plugged in using the "video in" on my PC.
Studio 9 can automatically split the footage into scenes or you can manually do this, thus being able to edit adverts or your holiday footage or whatever. Within the "edit" tab you can create menus etc. if you so wish, add or change the soundtrack (alter volume levels etc) you can also "enhance" the video - lighten, darken etc. add transitions etc.

In Studio 9, you then click on the "make movie" tab and select the option to create DVD.
Studio 9 then renders the footage and records onto the DVD recordable disc.

Took me a few attempts to get my head round it, so I recommend your first attempts to be on DVD-RW (or +RW) to save money on mistakes!

One potential problem is your video capture card must be compatible with whatever software you opt to use. Pinnacle's web site should list all compatible cards.

I say this as before I upgraded (free) to Studio 9.3, my card apparently wasn't compatible, so for my first transfers, I recorded the VHS to mini DV tape (my camcorder) then plugged that into my PC via Firewire (IE1394) so I captured onto my PC from the DV camcorder. Quality was still as good as the original VHS tape to my eyes.

Good luck! Martin.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Similar method to blythe, I use a svhs cable from the VCR to my 'AverTV' card and load it into Video Studio 8 (www.ulead.com) for editing and burning to DVD. VS8 is easy to use, cheap and powerful enough for 'normal' people.

Pinnacle 9 and Video Studio 8 should be top of your shortlist if you don't want the expense and learning curve of pro products like Adobe Premiere.

If you already have Nero6 and dont need sophisticated editing you could probably use that.
ps. the software DVD player included with the latest version of Nero is superb.

If you have a camcorder that is DV equipped you might be able to get away with a £10 firewire card and use the camcorder to the PC on passthru with the VCR attached to the camcorder.

On the software side others know way more than I do but when looking for stuff for my Mac I found Avid do something called Free DV for the Mac and the PC as well - seems well regarded and it's free, though of course there will be limitations.
