Upgrade Option to - Supercap or not ?

Posted by: Roger40 on 25 April 2004

I'm currently putting together a system that comprises of CDS2/XPS2, NAC82/Hi, 2x135s into SBLs.

If I was to go a little further I was wondering what would be a best, 4x135s active into SBLs or supercapping the NAC82 ?

I currently have a SNAPS and a FC2, which would be the better to use into the SNAXO if I was to go active ?

Also to make my SBLs active is it just a question of removing the passive crossover ?

What sort of difference does putting another Hi onto the 82 make ?

Alot of questions I know, but any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

I think your best bet is to

a) buy a Supercap and sell the Hicap plus the other bits. Adding a Supercap will bring about a significant improvement.

b) then replace the 82 with either a 52 or 252.

That will give you far more musicality than going active with a 82. Your 135s are sufficient to control the SBL's and give them the necessary grunt and volume.

Only then start thinking active and frankly you would be better selling the 135s and going for either a NAP300 or 500.

One bit of advice. Please do not go active until you have heard it and the passive alternative. Going active is not everyones cup of tea.

Hi Roger,
I did the upgrade from NAC82/hi to NAC82/sc, and it was a big step that can be heard at once.
I never did the comparison between two Hicaps and a Supercap but two Hicaps are a 'one way street'
if you would upgrade the NAC82 to a NAC52/252 later ...
For me the step from NAC82/sc to NAC52 was the biggest one, more impressive than going from Hicap
to Supercap.
My System is still passive (CDS2, 52, 250, NBLs), but people say you should not go active without a very good preamp (at least a 52/252)!
Therefore my advice: Go for a Supercap ...
