Decking stain
Posted by: Fisbey on 20 September 2004
At long last I've finished my garden deck, took ages and looks pretty good, however when I started staining/sealing the decking booards (with cuprinol presverver/stain) I used the last of the the first tin on the first two boards, then started a new tin for the rest of the boards, the problem is the first two boards are appreciably darker than the rest. I knowe I should have started the new tin for all the boards but - how do I get all the boards the same shade? A second coat doesn't darken the light boards appreciably, so I may try a third coat.
Any other suggestions that don't involve putting new boards down?

You can sod about with stain for ages, but eventually you will just wind up replacing the two boards.
Just replace the two boards now and save yourself the torture.
Bad luck.
Deep down you know this anyway

Can you not turn the 2 boards over and stain them with same stain as the others?

Yep replaced the two boards - stained them - all looks good. One more coat all over and it's done!

Hope you've thrown away the "wrong" tin, so mistakes can't happen again.

I think the problem was me using the last of the 'wrong tin' on the first planks instead of starting the decking boards with the new tin (both tins were labelled as they same shade - not sure about the batch number tho') - or maybe I just hadn't stirred/shaken the first tin enough - quite likely in my quest to get it all finished in between showers.....
The first of the 'wrong tin' was used on the rafters etc.
Ho hum live and learn - slow down Fisbey.....
