Is it going to be as lame as the TV adverts suggest? Or am I being a bit prem?

Is is inevitable that the bigger the bucks the bigger the mess?

You have adverts already! Damn, we are behind the times down here. I have been looking forward to the movie so I hope it isn't lame. I enjoyed the books, the radio programmes that I heard and the television series so I hope the movie doesn't muck it up.

If that rule holds true then that other sci-fi remake due out this summer, "War of the Worlds" will truly be a catastrophe!

I thought the most recent R4 series was pretty lame. I was hoping for better.

With respect, both the two most recent trailers I've seen (both can be found over at apple's website: http://www.apple.com/trailers/ ) have been pretty good. My only complaint is over the voice of the book: Stephen Fry is just plain wrong. Fry is really knowledgeable and sounds it, the guide, on the other hand (made up as it as of contributions from the backs of cereal packets and from people who wander in off the streets, containing much that is wildly inaccurate, etc.) should have have a voice where you aren't quite sure if they're blagging it or not. I can see why they picked Fry, he's a big name, but it was a mistake. Personally, I think someone like Bill Nighy would have been perfect.

What exactly is it about the adds that suggest
problems to you?

Harry - don't knock the radio show, it was an absolute classic.

Tam

I think Fry is a great choice - remember The Guide, where it's wrong, is definitively wrong, and Fry does a good definitive.

Yes, but Fry does definitively knowledgeable, not the slight air of the confidence trickster that I reckon the guide ought to have. Really they want Peter Jones, such a shame he's dead Frown

Well, the trailers are fun, especially the 3rd one.
I'm going to have to get a refresh on the books and then see it.
Anyone know if it covers all 4 books in the trilogy or just the first?

And anyone with a British accent will sell a movie in the USA (even if it SOUNDS British to the average American -- like Australian, for example...)

Is that Alan Rickman voicing Marvin? Actually he could have done the voice of the book too. I'd have preferred his weary cynicism over Stephen Fry too.

... 'The Fit' 19-24 on BBC R4 from next month ... agree 13-18 last year not quite 'up to 1980s standard', but many years have passed ... TV DVD - new film o.k., but original radio versions classic demonstration of how great is radio ...

Yes that is Alan Rickman, perfect for the role, I think. I agree that the most recent series of the radio show was not up to par, and there was a pretty simple reason: it was basically a straight adaptation of book 3. I think the strength of the franchise was always that it could be wildly different between media. While series one and two played to radio's strengths, and had a plot that jumped about at often quite insane speeds, three just felt like the book was being read aloud (though douglas adam's cameo was a nice touch).

Naimdropper: I think it will basically only cover the first book (it would be hard to fit much more in) and I've seen nothing in the trailers that suggests otherwise. Hopefully it will do well and we'll get the rest. One good sign, they've clearly changed some things, which I think is good, otherwise it wouldn't really be the inconsistency we've come to expect from the guide.

The film's had a good review in this months Q.

Though I've got to admit my visualisation of Marvin is so prejudice by the TV series that the new Marvin was a bit of a shock!!!
