6 weeks ago, virtually unknown - then just about hits the world record in the World Champs. Just something not quite right...

I tell you what, if I was her, and had a sense of humour, as I crossed the finish line I'd have whipped a pipe out and started 'puffing' on it...
Posted on: 19 August 2009 by Chillkram
I guess they're worried that it might not just be a pipe she's been whipping out!

Strange how 'the runner' was the only one with long shorts!

I just listened to a TV interview with her; close eyes, he is a bloke, open eyes, he/she is as close to a bloke as needs be to pass the test if dressed in blokes clothes.

But before we all get into is she or is he, we all need to understand she has not just appeared on the scene, she has some notable achievements already; last year she won the Commonwealth Youth Games 800m in India, when she stormed the gold in a new games record of 2:04.23. She posted the world's best time this year of 1:56.72 only 3 weeks ago at the African junior championships in Mauritius. Her Berlin winning time of 1:55.45 is just the kind of development to expect from a developing talented 18 year old athlete.

But my issue is not with the person, I feel so sorry for her to have to go thru this embarrassing public questioning of her gender.
My issue is with the authorities .............

SHAME on them, ASA must have known this would be an issue, ditto the WC organising people.
SHAME on them for not seeing this coming and not taking predetermined measures and prepared statements to make the situation clear and to include medical (technical) explanations on why she looks and sounds so much like a male. It may mean her obvious hormone or whatever problem it is forces a debate on her ability to compete in female events, but that issue should have been sorted years ago, done & said all we have seen it before.
But the biggest SHAME is on them all for not protecting a young vulnerable and very talented athlete from this mess. We can only hope that she does not go back to SA and disappear into oblivion.

Apparently they knew there was a storm brewing over her gender and the ASA had tried to have her stopped from coming to the championships so at least they tried to avoid the storm.

But the way it's been leaked out for all to see and question is completely out of order. Very poor judgement on the authorities' side. And why does it take several weeks for the test results? And why do they have to have so many tests? Surely gender testing at the DNA level is a piece of cake. It was my understanding that gender testing was the first DNA test because it was so easy.

Couldn't agree more with you, strange case so.

I agree with Mike-B, well said.

Frank-gender testing is not actually as simple as it may appear.

A number of conditions exist which blur the diagnosis of gender. Gender is defined by structural, hormonal and social definitions and is not always unequivocal. Several elite athletes in the past have been revealed to be of the 'incorrect' gender. This is not an issue of doping, but genetics and phsyiology.

If this young person has a gender disorder she will need considerable support and sympathy.

There is definitely a case to answer, however it's hard to see how the authorities could have handled it worse so far.

Analysis using DNA testing is quick and gives diagnoisis the presence of X and Y chromosomes, XX if female XY if male. The amelogenin (gender) test is standard as part of DNA identification tests used for forensics and paternity. Most UK providers would have a validated result in 24-48 hrs if the customer was prepared to pay for quick service so I don't understand what the delay is either.

The whole thing has been handled most insensitively.

Chromosomal sex can be other than simple XY or XX. XXY XXX XO for example. Some individuals are mosaics with a mixture of normal andabnormal sex chromosomes.

Some disorders can make XY indivuduals have feminised sexual characteristics and some can make XX indivuduals have androgen (male hormone) excess.

It is NOT that simple.

Agreed Bruce, I was just saying that the DNA analysis results looking for the presence of a Y chromosome should be delivered quickly. Complex chromosomal analysis takes longer.
