DOH!

When we lived in Saudi, space in our living room was tight. This forced us to put the tv in the corner of the room, with the speakers against different walls, either side of the tv. The walls were at 90 degrees to each other, but the speakers pointed roughly at the seating position.
At first, the left speaker was too close to the tv and affected the picture, with faint colouring in the top corners of the screen. Or so we thought. I moved the speaker slightly further away from the tv, but the 'staining' remained.
Fast forward Feb 2000, new job, living in small, 250 year old cottage. Small living room. We could have put the speakers either side of the fire- place, but the right speaker would have been too close to the tv, which again is in the corner. So, the left speaker was placed left of the fireplace, the right speaker to the right of the tv on the right hand wall.....a mirror image of the Saudi set up.
Yesterday. Not at work. Got the fidgets. Mmmm, I thought, what if I just try the speakers either side of the fireplace and see how much the tv is affected. 2 minutes later, all in place. Tuner on the go, tv on........no staining!! And, of course, the hi-fi sounds bloody glorious. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!! The only reason I can think of for the previous staining of the tv picture is perhaps there was a magnetic source in the wall next to the tv. Doh doh and double doh!
On the bright side, a free upgrade of some magnitude.
