Hello everybody,
With your permission, I'd like to come back to speakers matching with Naim. My present system is : CD3.5/Hicap/72/250/Proac R2s.
I'm globally satisfied with the sound given by this system. But I would want more details, a tigther bass and a bit of warmness.
For more musical informations, I think I have to go for CDX or for NAC82. But what do you think about speakers matching? What would be the best match for my system?
Thanks for your kind advice.
YOON.

A far better CD player! The CD3.5 is totally out of its depth here, you need a higher quality source for the amp and speakers that you own. I would consider a CDX the absolute minimum, it will bring all the things that you mention.

I agree with Tony on this one. As an alternative you could look at a 2nd hand player like a CDi, you can pick these up for £800, sell the 3.5 and look at a 2nd hand 82. This will give you the same(ish) set up that I have and trust me the CDi will shine. I have Sbl speakers which are ruthlessley revealing of any source.

The CDX alone can be a bit 'thin' and technical sounding, add XPS for a richer and more fullsome sound if not exactly warm. This is of course serious outlay. An alternative would be a Meridain 508, quite a different character to the CDX but might give you what you want.

I have hi/3.5/hi/72/140/Pro-ac 1SC. The system never really sang until the second hi-cap was added. With the one hi-cap, when it was on the CD then the sound was a thin in the mid-range; when it was on the 72, the trebles became harsh. With two hi-caps the systems sounds much more balanced - refined and smooth.
Additionally, removing some of the spare boards will help things - if I remember correctly you definetly want to leave the tape boards in - without them the system goes very raw.
2nd hand hi-cap can be picked up cheap - and if you don't like it I gather they sell pretty easily again.
One other thought occurs...what order do you have the stuff plugged in? It made a pretty big difference when I followed the Naim order.

Hi,
Thanks for your kind attention and comments.
David,
Yes. In terms of budget, your idea is perhaps the most efficient way of upgrade. I was also thinking about it. In short term, I think I'll try that solution. By the way, how does Proac 1SC sound like with NAP140? Does the amp drive them comfortably?
And another question : could you please inform me
of "the Naim order" of plugs?
Regards, Yoon.

The 140 is fine to drive the 1SC's. Undoubtedly a 250 would be more comfortable. At the momment it is only on very loud complex pieces that the it starts to show the limitations of the 140. On balance I am planning many upgrades before touching the 140. I like mini-monitors, no bass boom and the 1SCs were the most musical of those I listened to. Have heard others say they liked the Tablette 2000 better, but it didn't do it for me.
Check out the NANA website for info on the order to plug in. I am at work now so can't look, but believe it is power first, then Hi-caps, the pre, then source. Maybe someone else will confirm if my memory is right.
Hope this helps, David
