Saturday night, sunday morning

Taking off from the Favourite 15 thread ... where I mentioned the great questions they pose to celebs in Mojo. What is your favourite Saturday night record? What is your favourite Sunday morning record?

Things I play on Saturday night -

James Brown - Sex Machine - too obvious?
Weather Report - Black Market - the live version from 8:30 is a riot, often achieving the 'All soloing at the same time maxim.
Free - Mr Big - Kossof's amazing, churning guitar is met by Fraser's popping bass.
Hendrix - Little Wing - from Live in the West is a killer
Miles Davis - Spanish Key
The The - - Uncertain Smile - tinkle those ivories Jools!
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter, Tumbling Dice

Sunday Morning -
Richie Havens - Here comes the sun - again the live version
Holger Czukay - Persian Love - Arabic vocal sample entwined with sinuous guitars.
Keith Jarret - Country - Beautiful
Joni - Case of you - and most other things she's done

I'll try to make notes the next time I'm there!
This is just a selection that springs to my mind. As does the question as to whether with alcoholic involvement do your preferences become more obvious, blatant, overcharged emotional ... make sense. Or do your needs become more complex. Head or heart?

Being nothing if not consistent

Saturday Night

Back In The D.H.S.S. - Half Man Half Biscuit
Back Again In The D.H.S.S. - Half Man Half Biscuit
ACD - Half Man Half Biscuit
McIntyre, Treadmore And Davitt - Half Man Half Biscuit
This Leaden Pall - Half Man Half Biscuit
Some Call It Godcore - Half Man Half Biscuit

Sunday Morning

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Road - Half Man Half Biscuit
Four Lads Who Shook The Wirral - Half Man Half Biscuit
Trouble Over Bridgwater - Half Man Half Biscuit
Cammell Laird Social Club - Half Man Half Biscuit
Achtung Bono - Half Man Half Biscuit
Editor's Choice / Saucy Haulage Ballads - Half Man Half Biscuit

I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend. If somebody had hidden my HMHB albums then it would be non-stop Shirley Collins - especially Anthems In Eden and Folk Roots, New Roots.

As I've acknowledged ... I should have visited the music forum before.

I don't think you can beat enthusiasm and persistence and ROTF's championing of HMHB is nothiing if not enthusiastic and persistent. You know what, I've no clear picture of what they are about (sorry!), I guess I'd better go and investigate.

Oh yes, I could be moved to a little Rory on a Saturday night. Is it 'Europe' which starts with the great exhortation 'Let's go to work'.

Sunday morning - one of my absolute faves is Pat Metheny's (again live) 'Are you going with me' from the album 'Travels'.

Aren't they the same album? Wouldn't that get a bit dull playing one after the other Winker ?

Dull never - one is vinyl and one is CD, plus the versions of All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit and The Trumpton Riots are different. I would willingly listen to any HMHB album twice on a Saturday evening or any other night of the week.

I go for things like Beatle's later works, Little Feat, Allman Bros, or Stevie Wonder mid career stuff like Talking Book or Innervisions for the night, or Steeley Dan.

Sunday Joni is good. Sometimes I end a late night session with her to calm me down. Allison Krause and Union Station, Emmylou Harris. Woah, all women I wonder why? OK throw in Elton's early stuff.

Ah, the wonderful Little Feat. Lowell's 'Thanks I'll eat it here' works pretty well on a Sunday morning for me.

Sunday morning, it is things which gently scratch the inside of the skull which work for me.

And, indeed, one of the follow up questions prompted by the original one is 'When does Saturday night, become Sunday morning'. At about 2 in the morning, Joni might come into play with selections from the live 'Shadows and light' (what a band!), by 3 in the morning Joni might come into play with 'Night ride home' and, by then, it is probably Sunday morning. Court and Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns ... Both Sides Now ... Turbulent Indigo ... too many. Aja works well on a Sunday morning. Sonny Rollins's 'Way out west' would be a classic record for the cusp of Saturday night meets Sunday morning. If memory serves me correctly, that's about when it was recorded. I always love the way it gets more and more horizontal as the album moves through its tracks.

As I'm in the Middle East this is my Saturday night, insofar as it is the first day of the weekend, and it is Television 'Marquee Moon' which accompanies my typing.

Mmmm? Wonder what will follow that.
