Darcus Vs Joan; Midweek R4

Posted by: Roy T on 19 October 2005

While listen to this morning's edition of Midweek R4 I wondered if the airwaves had been hijacked by the Gerry Springer Show such was the exchanges between darcus and Joan - poor Libby she almost needed a firehose to quiten things down.

If you get a chance I recomend that you try to catch the repeat on R4 this evening of go for the Listen Again option on the link above.

Midweek is usually unbearably bland, full of oafs plugging their latest tedious books or whatever, so this morning was most wwelcome!

Joan's fatheaded all-American optimism meets Darcus' mulish paranoia... I thought it was a draw.

What exactly is Darcus Howe famous for other than being Darcus Howe?

quote:
he is an unbearably arrogant arsehole

Have to agree, it was a blessed relief to finally hear someone put him in his place.

Joan hit the nail right on the head when she picked him up for the huge chip he carries on his shoulder and the self-righteous whining he loves.

Go Joan!

I have always wondered why he chooses to live in a European country based upon european values when he seems to hate most of what we stand for.

He always seems to feel everybody is prejudiced.

I consider him wromg in that and believe that it is he who is prejudiced.

He should live in a country that does not anger him so much.

He is a bigoted opinionated and intolerant individual. And only seems to listen to his own point of view.

I have just listened to this.

Sounds like it was fun.

I had forgotten one great truth in this world.

ONLY WHITES ARE RACIST.

every one else has cultural differences and religious differences but are most ceratinly not racist.

Darkus obviously is fervently of this robust viewpoint.

Joan got it right in her retort about his family and parenting skills.

I spent a lot of time today in my car and when I heard this exchange on R4 and I thought that Joan Rivers' behaviour was reprehensible.

I heard it again later on 5 Live and it became humourous, but still wrong.

I didn't hear the full build up to the exchange but it seemed to me that she just got it completely wrong and out of context.

Darcus Howe used to present a show called "The Devil's Advocate", where, dressed as, err.."the devil" or at least a near enough approximation, he would interrogate some prominent individual for various indiscretions, and so on.

An example was Imran Khan and his prior comments admitting to ball-tampering during his playing days.

Beyond that I would imagine Howe is a journalist/columnist somewhere, but I don't know what else he is famous for.

When you mentioned "Joan" I thought you meant Bakewell, not Rivers!

I heard the repeat last night. Something of a handbags at 10 paces event really. It was good to hear JR at least stick up for herself, even if it seemed like she misunderstood what DH was trying to say. He is just a boor, regardless of his ethnic background and seemed to be blaming the fact that he obviously doesn't come out of this new documentary very well on the director trying to create a narrative, whatever that means. JR was right on the money about his parenting history though and did seem to get the better of the exchange. She had also regained here equilibrium and humour when her interview eventually began.

Darcus Howe
is apparently noted for his writings on :

BLACK ISSUES

and regularly comments on the various injustices of past history and its impact on BLACKS in the modern world.

Including the significant 4 x 2 on his shoulder regarding the history of the West Indies.

Amusingly he seems to spare no thought for the previous indigenous populations of the west indies who were displaced by the impact of foreign colonialisation.

It seems only blacks were persecuted.

he forgot to mention the many other groups who were caught up in this .

eg Chinese Indian Sub Continent Europeans who were not of the ruling classes.

He also forgets that the slave trade , which was an abhorent part of history, was a common practice in African nations at that time. The man difference being the export of the slaves overseas by the Europeans.

Unfortunately mankind has been anything but KIND to others races etc over history.

Imagine it in this fair land The English hated us Scots over the last few centuries.

Amazing .
