Dan Berglund's Tonbruket

Posted by: Absolute on 12 March 2010

Dan Berglund, as I am sure most of you will know, was the bassist in E.S.T and has now released a debut album as 'Dan Bergland's Tonbruket' (Tonbruket meaning 'sound workshop' in Swedish).

Has anyone heard any of it? Apparently it steps further from from 'jazz' with more alternative acoustic/rock influences.

I think it is always hard for members of a formerly world renowned and revered group to start something new. Will it be as good? Are they just using their fame to keep going?

From what I have read, it seems to be enough of a step in a new direction that it needs approaching without the thought 'this bassist was in EST' floating around ones head.

I would be very interested if anyones heard this, what they think of it?

There are a few sample tracks here which I just found.

Will post again once they have been listened to a bit.

The sample's on the website don't give much away.
Suffice to say, it's very, very different. Will need to listen to more of it, but its promising.

Absolute - I have had the album for about 6 weeks now and have been playing it quite a lot - in fact, it was playing this morning.

I really like it. Yes very different from E.S.T. but not using fame to keep going as you ask. This is new music and it is a grower in my books.

A good article on Dan in this month's Jazzwise where you can learn quite a lot more about him, the group and album.

Here is a review from Colin Buttimer - I was introduced to Colin last year by a forum member and I really respect his ears and taste

Why don't you go out Monday night to the Southbank and see him - plenty of seats left - I'll be there and really looking forward to it. I met Dan at the Esbjorn Svensson memorial in late 2008 and he was totally choked. Glad to see him getting back out on the road again - it cannot have been easy.

Ended up going to the gig last night with a friend, utterly fantastic.

Simply brilliant music. Influences from far and wide all brought together creating something brilliant. The new pieces they played were very promising as well.

Need to release a second album already!

I highly recommend these guys.

Glad you went Absolute. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I kept looking at him thinking Esbjorn should be there and had a few tears in my eyes when they played Song for E. But his new band were excellent and it really did groove in places. I might go and see him in Southampton as well now.

The CD is waiting at home for me so I will get my first listen tomorrow night. I see him in Manchester on the 25th - sounds like I am in for a good show.

The energy they have together really shows live. So talented, and a good laugh too in places!
