Two speakers and a sub-woofer for forty quid (for my PC)

I've been struggling along with really basic and horrible stereo speakers on my PC. I do a fair bit of radio replay, and listening to samples of music on my PC, so decided to get something that sounded a bit better, for sensible money.

So; here it is. Altec Lansing VS2121. £40 from PC World, and I was pleasantly surprised with the sound quality. 2" drive units in the satellites, and a 4" unit in the sub; which felt a whole lot more substantial than some I picked up.

The sub is actually a bit OTT for us Hi-Fi types, but some partial bunging of the front facing port, reduces the output of the beast to give an acceptable tonal balance. There's also a headphone socket on the R/H satellite speaker.

The sub has its own internal power supply and mains plug. The rest of the system runs off the usual 3.5mm PC output socket.

Great VFM. Highly recommended.

A similar looking Altec Lansing 2 speaker sub set up came with my HP Media Centre. It works fine with the pc.

John,

I bought something similar for my PC too. Sound is great for the price. A tip to tame the bass is ... support! Actually I just put the cardbox carton that was housing the sub under it and stuck the whole ugly contraption on the floor and the bass has improved tremendously. Not so bloated and boomy anymore. Just thought I would post my experience.

Arun;

"Fascinating Captain".

I still have the box and will check out your tuning tip. Does it work with Hi-Fi speakers?

I feel a whacky thread coming on!

Actually, in all seriousness - there are some in the Hi-Fi speaker business, who question the absolute efficacy of spiked speakers, preferring the sound of a more resilient coupling to the floor.

You could be onto something here.
