Nakamichi CR2
Posted by: Haroon on 16 February 2004
Ive seen one going for 30 quid today its lookin a tad dusty, but is it worth buying at that price. Im not looking to really record but just to playback about 40 tapes, perhaps transfer those to computer to clean and/or record on minidisk. Or would I be better off with a yamaha kx580?

I reckon 30 for a Nak sounds like a good price (if it works!).

Yeah - snap it up - that's even better than £100 for serviced DR2 on Pink Fish
AND FAR MORE affordable than that prat on Ebay's CR1 with a BIN (ONLY!!!!) of £199 - about £160 too much. "Becoming rare" my butt!!!

So im now once again enjoying the fuzzy warm sound of cassette, it is rather beguiling in comparison to the harshness of early CD's. Anyone know what MPX filter does? And is it better to use B or C dolby NR.
I need to buy a demagnitiser and a cleaning kit - wonder if they still sell those

If you WEREN'T in Derby, I have a proper Nakamichi head demagnetizer (for open reel, but perfect for Compact Cassette if you're careful!) available for loan. The cassette shell type ones are good for in car etc, but they don't demag the capstans. I got it in 1998 when I acquired an Akai CR81D 8track cartridge recorder (to play the then-1 cart I had!) - he he... Never have managed to figure out how to dismantle the deck to demag it though!!! I really peed Ian from Audio-T off there - he'd had the demag earmarked for ages and I sniped it from a colleague for £30 - if I'd known he wanted it BEFORE I'd bought it though... D'oh!
You can get Alsop 3 if you look around. I think Richers do kits as well. Woolies still do kits with swabs and fluid I believe as well.
Dolby C sucks - if you want a lovely synthesized crappy sound, use it. I'd rather have hiss and compatibility thanks. (Sorry Mike
).
A CR1/£24.99 is STILL a no brainer - you totally flukey ****
Since you're the man with "the deals" can you keep an eye out for an MB Vectrex at NON-Ebay prices for me?

Heee heee, I regularly pop into my local Cash Convertors store. Most of the stuff is pure rubbish but ocaisonally you'll find an old bargain. Most of the time stuff is put on for its real secondhand value e.g. they got a pioneer A400 for £139 quid, quite reasonable. But occaisonaly im sure they come across stuff they dont know the value of - Im hoping to one day find a Linn LP12/Ekos for a couple of hundred or less

I got a NAD 4225 tuner in our local Cash Convertors in Reading for £12 in 2002!!!! Mint - still works like a charm!
The one in Exeter USED to be good - it sucks now. I wish I'd got that Technics open reel they had in there in 2001.

Hi,
Just for the record (tape?) the Multiplex (MPX)filter is designed to filter out the FM pilot tone (18Khz) when recording from FM radio broadcasts. This is an inaudible tone, transmitted with the signal which most tuners supress. For recording from Vinyl/cd etc leave it switched off as its use will only cut off the top treble ie from 18Khz and above. Best leave it switched on when recording from radio, as an unsupressed pilot tone plays havoc with the dolby circuits!
As for the price, go for it. My guess is a CR1E would fetch £60-80, or a bit more if on ebay!!!
Hmmm cash Convertors, I have had the occasional bargain in the early days, A Musical Fidelity T1 tuner (labelled as fidelity!!) for £15 and a REL Strata sub (displayed withn the PA gear for £47.) ...I wish i had discovered ebay back then.
