J*** on Radio 3

Posted by: Dev B on 07 January 2004

Two unmissable gigs are coming up in the next couple of weeks. On Fri 9th Jan, there's a chance to hear the wonderful Dave Holland Quintet, featuring saxophone virtuoso Chris Potter and the octopoidal drumming of Billy Kilson, while on the 16th Jan there's more from the London Jazz Festival with a set from US/Scandinavian free jazz outfit School Days, featuring saxophonist Ken Vandermark. 11.30 pm, Radio 3.

I was at the Schooldays concert. The warm up act a duo, featured at a chap playing one of those fantastic Steinway Grands in the Purcell room with a succession of childrens kitchen toy implements without once touching the keys. His partner played a "Tuba" or some industrial copper piping, I wasn't sure. This playing involved dismantling it then banging the various bits on one another and then putting it all back together again. At one time he blew this massive horn at the Steinway cover producing a wind like effect on the strings. In all it all lasted 47 minutes 34.66687 seconds. Fiona from Late Junction was sitting in front of me.

The Schooldays gig itself was great and I bought an LP from the wondrous Paal Nillsen Love after the gig.

"Fiona from Late Junction was sitting in front of me"

I note she wasn't at the Terraplane gig.

I thought Verity was the one all keen concert people spotters looked out for, or have I got it wrong?

Dev

Dev, belated seasons greetings! Matthew refers to a rather less successful musical soiree I organised during the jazz festival. As I remember however he was quite enamoured of the hispanic groove outside in Spitalfields.

Thanks for the tip Dev, really enjoyed the gig on Friday.

I particularly enjoyed the two Dave Holland live solo numbers which were from German radio? and which were played after the concert recording.

Anybody else hear it?
