Yes

While I'm tracking down decent vinyl copies of 'The Yes Album' & 'Fragile', I wondered about getting the remastered CDs (1994). What's the verdict on these ?

And while I'm here, does anybody remember the name of the Atlantic Sampler with 'America', the Paul Simon Song, by Yes.

No

[Sorry!]

The Song America is on the Album : yesterdays, the copy I have is utterly shite vinyl which has to be held by both hands lest it snap.

The remaster of fragile is good, however I never had the original on CD so a true comparison is difficult, I picked up a mint of both Fragile and Yes Album, and the vinyl does sound better than the CD so there you go.

The remaster dosn't really address the massive distortion at the end of South Side of the Sky, but I think that was a lost cause.

Yesterdays ? that's a Yes compilation ? OK, when 'America' was originally released it was released on a Sampler from Atlantic of a bunch other artists. I'll look into Yesterdays tho'.

edit: The sampler was called 'Age of Atlantic' of 'New Age of Atlantic', the YesWorld web site

has it as 'age of Atlantic' but my fuzzy memory makes me think it was the New Age of Atlantic. :end edit

Damn, South side of the sky is buggered on the master tape ? I thought it was end of side misstracking.

I've been wading through the yes catalogue and web pages out there and there's one Yes album qualified by some as 'bastard'. It's called 'Drama', what's the view of Yes Naimees on this one, from what I can discover it looks interesting. I feel like taking a giant leap back into 'prog rock'!

Peter

He He Drama.

Actually if you take it in the context of just an album and not a yes album then its OK.

But yes it rarely gets an airing, the first track is quite heavy, very dynamic but there are some notable tracks on there, I am a Camera is OK too.

Probably one to wait for second hand on vinyl, no great loss then eh?

I rate it along the line of 90125, if that means anything to you.

I must be a sorry camper, I've ordered 'Classic Yes' on CD, so that I can play the good stuff without cranking up the Garrard, and some reasonably priced copies of 2nd hand vinyl for 'Drama' and 'Going for the One', am I sick or what ?

Guess what though ? 'Relayer' must be hard to find on vinyl coz' the copies I saw were on offer for US$25!

....pause.

I like Drama too. But then I loved 'Video killed...' and wasn't surprised at all when they joined. I felt for TH at the Liverpool Empire when his voice went - what a brave man trying to sing john Anderson songs.

'Relayer' is fantastsic - almost drum & bass in parts.

Hate 90125 though.

I started with 'Time and a Word' bought 'The Yes Album', then 'Yes', 'Fragile' & 'Close to the Edge', the price of 'TFTO' put me off, I don't know if I ever listened to it. I haven't given any Yes a listen since, except of course 'Owner of a lonely Heart' which is the only thing that gets on the radio.

I even saw them at one of the early '70s Crystal Palace thingies, the one with Elton John, Fairport Convention IIRC.

Relayer looks interesting, too, oooh nan I liked Greenslade too!

Peter

...Greenslade were great! wink Especially the Dave Lawson songs. These stand up very well today. 'Bedside manners', 'Doldrums' - wonderful electric pianos and ARPs.

Dave Greenslade turned up at burningshed to have the the new GS album produced! Apparantly he lives in suffolk. It's where old rockers finally migrate to....

Aren't you supposed to go to church to confess ugly stuff like this?

I did dump all that stuff for one reason or another, but since I listened to Yes this weekend, I can't get this classic prog rock stuff out of my mind. I have a feeling there was a band called 'Palladin' I liked, or was that the label with Greenslade, I just can't quite remember it now.

I 'lost' a number of records twice in my nomadic periods, the first time was in 1980 when I went to the united states, I did recover some of those records. In 1987 I had approx 600 albums and in one mighty binge I offloaded about 300 of them when I was going to move for the nth time in a few months. Then, a couple of years later I loaned my record collection to a music loving acquaintance, and just two weeks before he was going to move to another state, I happened to show up from France where I was living by then to recover them. I had also taken about 50 precious LPs to hawaii when I went there to, err, live. I lost those completely. The one I regret the most out of that lode, was 'What's Going On' - Marvin Gaye, I had a gorgeous japanese pressing of that.

I've still got the odd classic bought at initial release date, like The Jam's 'All Mod Cons'.

'LOTR' was toss

And WoTW (Jeff Lynne)

And TPOTC (The Dave G 'solo' toss box set)

But listen to Bedside manners and Spyglass guest again.

one of the things friends have noticed is that Kayak albums seem to appear in your record collection and you have no recollection of having bought them. But then again, I found on sunday I now have 2 copies of an Asaq Maboul album. I know I only bought one. They are breeding.

I have literally everything on record by Yes
and have seen every member of the band live except Pete Banks on guitar and Trevor Horn/Geoff Downs (I don't think they even toured the U.S.). A great place to start for Yes newbies is the compilation called YesYears. I bought it on cassette (not available on LP) and play it a lot in my truck. The "previously unreleased" material is quite good as is the overall selections. It includes the single Money which has the best lyrics, IMO, of any Yes song. It also includes a history book on Yes which is quite definitive.

BTW, I think Tempus Fugit on Drama has the tastiest Chris Squire bass-line and tone of any Yes song.

Is yes years the yellow box set? Avilable on CD?

I thought yes songs was probably better for a true idea of live yes, but alas now we move into personal preference

I've listened to most of the CD remasters and I think they're pretty good. But, for the real Yes experience you just can't (IMHO) beat the UK vinyl originals. - They HAVE to be original pressings though ('Plum' Atlantic labels - 1st four)- Just try to find decent copies though!! Some of those 70's reissues sound terrible.

I like Drama too. It still sounds like a Yes album to me and has some superb dynamics.

I'm fairly certain that Yesyears was released on vinyl by the way....

Made me go order
  • Classic Yes (CD)
  • Drama (LP)
  • Going for the One (LP)
  • Relayer (LP)

and I'm think about Big Generator!

Looks like these go for about £30 these days from Ebay & a few dealers that I've looked over.

Agreed most stuff after going for the one are a bit flakey to my taste.

There most recent stuff is puke inducing.

'Classic Yes' arrived today, it's the first CD version not the 1994 remaster. Overall the sound is good, and the cuts that came from 1970's 'The Yes Album' are first rate - they must have used some fine tube equipment to record it, anybody know ?

I didn't know how much I missed their music, I really enjoy Bruford's drumming and Tony Kaye's no nonsense keyboards. Jon Anderson is in fine voice, even if time has done nothing to make sense of the lyrics confused , but still.

There are two live cuts on this disc, they are disposable in my view, anyone looking for the vinyl try to get the 7 track copy with the bonus 7" with the live cuts. The 9 cuts come to 65 minutes which is pushing it for a 1980s LP.

This is a fine way in to the 'Trooper' period of Yes.

Keys to Ascension-superb modern live recordings of classic tracks,Wakeman on keyboards plus some ok new studio tracks, can pick up cheap. I got them for £7 each.
The Ladder is also OK as a new release and Magnification was a real surprise as it was an "orchestral" Yes, used the orchestra as an instrumentto replace keyboards and done so it did not swamp the sound unlike so many other Rock Bands + Orchestra albums.
Latest news Wakeman has just rejoined Yes!! for the n th time.

I'm still waiting for Drama, Relayer & Going for the One. I have in mind to investigate Chris Squire's solo release as well as 1989's Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe. Once I've got all that digested I'll see if I have the stamina to approach the groups 1990s and beyond opus.
