Yes

While I'm tracking down decent vinyl copies of 'The Yes Album' & 'Fragile', I wondered about getting the remastered CDs (1994). What's the verdict on these ?
And while I'm here, does anybody remember the name of the Atlantic Sampler with 'America', the Paul Simon Song, by Yes.

Peter,
To answer your original question, The Yes Album sounds superb in the remastered version.
Never liked Fragile much.

i went and bought the yes album (the remastered version, not sure of the date tho) they strike me as sounding very much like Rush circa 2112.
I've always thought this too. There had to have been a lot of cross-influence between these bands.
The current prog-metal of Tool, Filter, etc. strikes me as a total rip-off of early Yes and Rush. For some chuckles, listen to Lateralus, then listen to 2112. Same album, basically. Rush should sue.

I suppose the voices are similar to rush, and I happen to have a bit of that as well, Farewell to Kings probably being my favorite
Yes are much more musical though, yes album being a particuaerly good example of this, star ship trooper is a stonking good song, the end build up was always my preferred method for assessing hifi.
I remember going into salisbury HIFI to listen to a set of Kef Coda 7s on actacamas, and I took this track along, they couldn't believe someone so young was listening to yes! I valued the end of this track because at the time I thought the bass was great big and fat.
when I got my first bit of naim a nait two I listened again to this track and was a little dissapointed to find the bass was not so deep. Of course in time I have learnt that it is as deep, but controlled.
Anyway I digress, if you have no other yes I suggest you get close to the edge next, go straight to track 2, do not collect any moneis.
If you are still interested after that, then perhaps Going For The One or Fragile.
enjoy

I did mention that I only happen to like revealing science of god on this album didn't I Nick?
snigger, I guess the rest is a little hard work.
Mind you Ritual I quite like as well.
I suppose I am biased.
Got Ummagumma this weekend, now that is some up your own arse hard work, except for the live slab of course.

TFTO was always Yes's ott album, Relayer is a much better bet to get back into them, or even better The Yes Album or Going for the one. TFTO has few redeeming features (IMO).
By "More" do you mean Pink floyd's "More" ??. I always found this a bit slight to be honest.

Yes much the same as Obscured By Clouds, another chill out one which I like once in a while.
I must also confess to liking Gilmours self titled album, which although undoubtably cheesy has a sort of hold over me I can't explain which draws me back once in a while.
But hey I like Tales from Topagraphic so what do I know ;-)

Got to admit I've not listened to these two albums for years (More & ...Clouds). I might just have a listen.
God knows what you've been listening to if you think the Nile Song is going to chill you out though!!

Yo,
what's all this talk of the Floyd, who are they anyhow!
Kidding.
I just started going through the current stock of unlistened to Yes recordings. I started with 'Going for the One', I have a dutch pressing it sounds compressed with no frequecy response or dynamic range. Only two songs sounded decent, the Chris squire song on side one and Awken on side two. Do I need a better pressing of this ?
It looks like 'Relayer' has been lost by the British Post office. The post from The UK is atrocious. Parcels get lost at an alarming rate, about 50 to 75%, must be the competition and market forces leading to a better service for the customer.
I'll be listening to 'Drama' tomorrow.

Peter I have two on vinyl, one appears from other discriptions to be an american one, (the cover is thicker and better quality. I also have it on CD, all of them are pretty poor recrodings, all compressed.
Its annoying because you just know there is some big dynamics in there, but its just not let out!

I'll look over the CD options, but it looks like 'Going for the one' is going to the recycle bin. Listened to Drama, that sounds much better.
'Going for the One' sounded so bad, it was like everybody was out of time with everybody else. Hard to believe they made the effort to record it.

You need a better copy of Going for the One. This is a great album, mine sounds OK (not great) My worst sounding Yes LP is Close to the Edge, My best is The Yes Album (and Drama) all vinyl.

Over the weekend I dusted off my copy of 90125 (NOT an album I would normally go for...) - It sounds superb!! - I'm not sure whether I actually LIKE it, but it is a wonderful (if 'flashy') recording!
I actually like the first album - possibly my favourite (cue angry hornets' nest...). Great recording (original UK vinyl pressing of course!) and superb musically - There's a real energy and enthusiasm from those young Yes boys on this one.

I like the first album. Rarely mentioned but good all the same.
90125 is undoubtedly good sounding, but I don't really consider anything after Drama to be a real Yes album, more like a different group.

Yes fans divide into various categories, and they correspond to the various periods of the group. I listened to 'Drama' today, and found it quite satisfying, much better than I would have imagined at it's original release. I'll give 'Going for the One' a couple more listens, to be sure. I'm looking forward to getting a decent vinyl or CD copy of 'Relayer', are there any specific recommendations for this, i.e. country of origin of pressing etc.
I bought a plum label 'Yes Album' and it sounds very good, I won an auction for a plum label 'Fragile', I'm particularly looking forward to this one. For the moment, I can't help thinking that it's Bruford's drumming that was the Yes magic ingredient.

Just realised I don't have more :-(
This is a bit bad because I am sure I used too. doh. Something else I will have to look out for.
How would one know if their Saucerful of secrets is original?
Mine is on EMI with a fame banner and gilmours name is spelt wrong through out the whole cover!

Going for the one is particuarly good if for no other reason the last tune: Awaken.
Got a mint copy the other weekend on vinyl, big tripple fold out thingy, very happy.

Listened to Relayer (original release vinyl) last night. Very exciting music. Almost Drum & Bass, Goldie style, in places.
And, as remarked in another thread, do get a record cleaner - it really makes sense if you want to listen to music & not pops & crackles.
Anyone know whey there is a credit blanked out by a black bar on my cover?

I have to admit that I never really listen to Andersons lyrics. Rather, I treat them as musical sounds like any instrument. Rather like Liz Fraiser in the Cocteaus. Otherwise you'd go mad. Oh wait - I am mad. Must have accidentaly heard some.
Moraz really added some blue notes in there.
Nick: henry fool should be back in the studio this month (assuming our globe trotting drummer can be in England for more that two days), otherwise I'm working on a new fire thieves album which has lots of lovely lyrics - none about fairies or aliens or alien fairies.

Gong blanked out the whole of Steve Hillages head one one live album.
They must have hated him....
I love Angels Egg. But I'm not a hippy & never take drugs.
Weird eh?

Saucerful - The original UK pressing (both mono and stereo) does have a laminated 'flipback' sleeve, but the easiest way to tell is that the record label (Columbia) is a blue text on black background. Later ones were silver text on black background. Even later ones (I think) have EMI labels.
Relayer - The original UK pressing does NOT have the credit blanked out. I can't remember what it should say (I can look at my copy if anyone is really interested!). Again, the easiest way to tell an original is that the 'photo on the inner left gatefold sleeve is wrongly annotated. From memory, it confuses Jon Anderson with Steve Howe. These were very quickly corrected! (Peter - I have a near mint, spare, original copy of Revolver - If you are interested - Cheap! - Please contact me off-board)
More - Although a certain well known 'comedy' price guide lists the 'couple facing east' as more 'valuable', it is a mid-70's re-issue and nowhere near as rare (and valuable) or desirable as the original 1969 issue - Which has a laminated flipback sleeve with green tinted 'photo to rear.
So...there we go! I just know these things (having been a major collector of UK original LP's for longer than I care to remember!) Sad, isn't it?!!
Just to stay off the Yes thread for a little longer - sorry Peter! - DSOTM (Floyd) - Has anyone ever seen a UK copy of this LP with a SOLID blue triangle on the label - ie, not the usual outline triangle? - Popular wisdom has it that this solid triangle label was the original design, but I have never, ever seen one; seen a picture of one or spoken to anyone who has!
Cheers!
