Yes

While I'm tracking down decent vinyl copies of 'The Yes Album' & 'Fragile', I wondered about getting the remastered CDs (1994). What's the verdict on these ?

And while I'm here, does anybody remember the name of the Atlantic Sampler with 'America', the Paul Simon Song, by Yes.

Yes, I wouldn't personally pay out 15 quid for the late 90s gatefold reissue (the only other mono issue - I suspect its the same digital remaster as the CD, so no point). I'd happily take a old non-UK Columbia mono though (in other words if its on Columbia, and mono I'll have it!).

Cheers,

Tony.

So in conclusion, non UK mono Colombia version of Piper.

Sorry you need to be more specific on gatefold, I have had a few now and am not sure, presumably later additions open up like a book, the original does not?

All I remember to date is that it was shiney on the front but not on the back, and it didn't open up!

I stress it was a few weeks ago (read month) so may not be there now!

Sorry for not responding!

The relayer does sound rather good, up to a point. The point being after they kick off just before it goes all nice at the end, the end bit sounds awful on one speaker, I think who ever was playing it before me managed to look after the record but the needle was hitting one side or something! Apart from that at the beginning it sounds rather fine, perhaps the trebles being a bit tinny, but then I have always found this with Yes.

I have probably mentioned this somewhere else in this thread but what the hey. On Fragile: South side of the Sky towards the end there is incredable distortion, I have noticed this on both CD and record since I have listened to Yes (well in excess of 10 years.) I therefore assume it was in the mastering, is there a version out there that does away with the distortion? Its on the high frequencies mostly Jons voice.

Gary,

I'll listen to my plum label Fragile, overall it's so much better than the WEA issue, I believe that South Side of the Sky doesn't distort.

Slightly off-topic but I have the a 1960s original of the first Small Faces album (DECCA LK 4790).

Anyone know if its worth anything?

According to Record Collector its worth 70 quid if its on a red Decca label, and 35 if its on the "boxed" Decca label.

It distorts, but not as bad as an WEA pressing.

No vinyl distortion when they played it live!!!
Plenty of other distortions, though... And the idiot next to me that had to make a cell phone call during Steve Howe's guitar solo. What a jerk!

I spotted a mono version of the kinks greatest hits at a booty today for a quid. But I left it.

Thinking long and hard now that was probably a silly thing to do, but the cover was knackered.

Also got another copy of relayer as everyone I have goes through some awful distortion twards the end (As mentioned)

Lets see how this one pans out, thats four copies now!

Hi Tony. I have original monos of both Piper and Saucer. Although it's been a while since I played them, I believe that the mono Saucer is not really very different to the stereo (other than it's in mono of course!). Piper is clearly a totally different mix. Saucer isn't.

What I really need is UK original, blue / black label stereo copies. When these do turn up they're always mono I.M.O. - The search continues...

Hi,

Gave this one a spin sunday. It's a frustrating record or is it just showing up how naff my record spinner is ? Side one, while having some, seemingly, interesting tunes just sounds cacophanous as if the band is not playing together, or on the same day. Side two perks up nicely and I even liked 'Wonderous Stories' for the first time. 'Awaken' grabbed my attention and I'm looking forward to listening to this cut again.

So are any of the available CDs any good for this recording, or are the first three cuts beyond redemption ?

Going for the One.... Again!

I just played on the Bastinized and Spacearmed 401. Guess what, the best I ever heard it. This record, Awaken at least, is a bastard to track and unravel. System wasn't up to it before.

Yup. I use this as a test track when listening to stuff. There's a fine line between 'wow' and'arrrggghhh!' and the former is seldom heard on many systems. When it used to end up in the Radio 1 Friday night rock show top 10 year after year, the playback quality on my old NAD 4020 was in a different league to what was coming out of my turntable. Course, that was in the days when I lived somewhere that got FM. No such luxury where I now live.
Cheers
