Connection question

Posted by: Merto on 10 January 2010

I am just venturing into the AV world and want to go step by step. I want to start with simple stereo so would like to have my TV, Sky Box and DVD (probably a Sony BDP S760) all play through my stereo speakers via my 552. Can someone give me an idea of what cables I need and the best way to connect them.

I normally have my Skybox Blueray connected to an AV2 via the digital outputs (optical) however the AV2 has got to back to Naim due to a fault so whilst it is away I am using Phono to din leads to connect to a 252. (Din at the Naim end) Works fine.

If you havent bought the blueray yet try the Sony against the equivalent Pioneer.

Thanks Don. Have you experienced any interference, hums etc or any detriment to the quality of music playback with a DVD player connected directly or do you disconnect it to listen to music?

Is there a way to connect the TV, DVD and sky all to the 552 with one lead ie using the TV or DVD as a hub? Sky is a bog standard, non HD version and is the least important item to connect.

I have not experienced any hum problems and it does not adversly affect the sound of other sources.

I would avoid connecting the tv apparently this could cause issues as tv can have a floating earth. You could try putting the sky box through the Blueray but that would only work if that had that facility. Good luck, please report on how you get on.

Hooked up an 8m RCA - DIN cable from flashback yesterday (excellent service) and tried various connection methods to the 552:

. From TV - Impressive and had the advantage of providing sound for sky, TV and the blue ray. In isolation I would have been happy with this but then I tried....
. From blue ray L & R front analogue out (with settings adjusted in the blue ray to indicate only 2 speakers). Much fuller and cleaner sound, a significant improvement over the TV output.
. From blue ray line out (with blue ray settings on stereo). All the benefits of the L & R outputs but with more air, dynamics, detail, speed. Perhaps not quite as deep but more controlled.

nb. TV connected to blue ray via HDMI (van den hul flat).

No problems with hum on any connection but have yet to fully asses any impact on the music.

Connecting directly to the blue ray was a significant improvement over connecting to the TV so I have left the cable there. However, I am considering a second cable to hook up the TV and through it, the sky. Can you see any downside to doing this, apart front routing a second cable of course? Hifi is on its own spur, with a dedicated earth.

As an aside, my satellite cable was a little short so I changed it (reterminated my fm radio cable as my old DVD player was also a radio, no longer used), resulting in a significant improvement to the picture....bonus!
